I did my very first 5k this year. A runner friend of mine recommended Hal Higdon training method. Worked great for me. Good luck on your first 5k!!!

It would depend where you are starting from....are you already running, or is this just the beginning? If you are new to running, try a program like Couch to 5k. Make sure you get fitted for running shoes at a running speciality store. Don't do too much, too soon, if you are new. If you have already been running, try to follow a 5k plan through "How to Train Like a Mother" (check out their website at Another Mother Runner). Have fun!

    well done lad!!

I did 5k for the first time in the gym last weekend. it felt great and I am gonna keep doing it and try and get my time down. eventually I would like to try a 5k on the road but I think am some way off that right now.

    I'm a chic :) Lol
And I may start with training at the gym. I take a Yoga and Cardio class at this time and only run on the elliptical. I hope to be down by at least 30 pounds by October to have less weight to carry while running.

Congratulations! I recommend getting fitted for running shoes that are conducive to your running style. Start a 5k prep program such as Hal Higdon or Couch 2 5k. Don't initially worry about speed. A lot do and end up with injuries. Be consistent, Stretch before and after each run. Vary your terrain. I like to mix up my week with trails, hills and interval work. Most of all; Have fun! This 5k will hopefully be the first of many! Good luck!

I'm a c25k graduate - it worked great for me! I ran my first 5k race on Memorial Day weekend and had a blast! If you're not running already, start with c5k - lots of great apps out there for it. I used c25kFREE by Zen Labs. They also have a 10k app which I just started last week - picks up right where 5k left off.

How much time do you have before the race? For tips on race prep info in the days leading up to it, check out this thread: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/279198-running-tip-so-you-are-about-to-do-your-first-race?hl=first+race

Lots of good info there, and he covers everything from 5k to full marathon.
