Strength before Cardio

Hi awesome people....
So 3 of my male colleagues, in separate discussions, each mentioned that it is better do cardio after strength/weight training. I had never heard of this. Should i move my HIIT cardio to after my weight training? or just keep them on their own separate days and do plain cross-training/cardio after weights? Or do Cardio in the am and Weights in the PM or vice versa? I need a good schedule that incorporates some running (cardio) miles at least 4 days per week (M, W, F & Sat).

i do cardio in the morning and lift weights in the evening or if i'm just doing an all out work out then i'll do weights first then i'll hit the treadmill
  • I personally like to do cardio first then weights after. I've found no negative impacts to doing HIIT cardio first before weights. Just find what works best for you and go with it.

Just in terms of performance, I would think you'd want to have HIIT on separate days from lifting. As to which would go first on lifting days, cardio or weights, I think it probably depends on what you want to focus your energy and best form on. If doing cardio before is going to sacrifice good form or leave you a little fatigued to lift, then do cardio after weights. On the other hand, if you need to focus on your running form, doing weights before could impact that.

I've heard that whatever you do first is the one where you're going to be able to give your all, for obvious reasons, so if you are really wanting to build strength you'd want to do weights first. Not sure how true it is, but it's why I lift first.

Many people say strength first because form is key and if you are tired from your cardio then you might not have good form.

I do cardio and weights on separate days, mostly because if I do my cardio first my lifts suck, and if I do my lifts first I'm completely trashed and have nothing left for cardio after. My lifts are heavy enough now that, for me, it's not worth trying to to both on the same day anymore.

This! Too much potential for injury if you are fatigued from cardio and lifting with poor form.
