I'm in a bit of a predicament...

This isn't weight related FYI, i just need some advice.

I applied for 2s job in 2 different offices on campus.
Job 1: It's a job that a lot of people pushed to get me the interview (not that I didn't deserve it, but it's about who you know when applying for jobs on a university campus). It is a programming job where I would be planning events for students. A lot of fun!

Job 2: 2 positions were open, one of them I want really badly as it fits with my future career plan perfectly. The other position open was a good one, but the 1st position in this office fit me better.

I found out today that I got both the position in the Job 1 and the position I want for Job 2. I really want job 2, but I really don't want to let down everyone who helped me get job 1.

Any advice? If I take job 2 (which I'm really leaning towards because I have to do what's best for ME at the end of the day) how do I tell job 1 "thanks but no thanks" without sounding ungrateful?

EDIT: They both pay the same. Each job gives a stipend every month as well as pay for my graduate school tuition, so that's not a factor in making a decision.

I hope this makes sense.

My advice is to explain the situation to everyone, and take the job that you really want. But, also be sure that the pay is right, and that there is longevity to the job so everyone can't come back and say I told you so.

'Thank you very much for the offer, but Job 2 is a better fit for me at this time.'

Don't worry about offending anyone who pushed you toward Job 1. At the end of the day you need to do what is best for you. And congratulations!

Thank everyone for their support but explain that Job 2 would be better for your career path so in the end you had to go with that.

If job 2 is going to be best for you in your long term career goals then there's no choice. Thank everyone for their time and help but explain that this is best for you in the long run. People may be disappointed but will COMPLETELY understand! Good luck!

Take job 2. It's YOUR career, after all. Thank the people who helped you get an interview for job 1, but explain to them that you have been offered something that is more compatible with your long-term goals. They should understand that your own career, and not your pleasing them, comes first.

i'd take job 2 but just make sure to tell the people who helped you that you really appreciated their help but you just have to take the other job. Tell them that you would love to return the favor should the situation ever arise.

Even though it was really nice of them to put your name in or push for you to be interviewed, I doubt they really did that much. It was probably more like a "I know this girl Carrie, she would be really great for the job!" type deal than anything else.

    UPDATE:

I accepted the position in job 2! Everything went perfectly as far as talking to the person from job 1 to decline the offer. Thanks for everyone's input!
