what is a good weight to lift?

I stared lifting weight, mostly with machine as that basically what the gym has, and I am not sure what weight to aim for when doing sets. I always thought that I should have some stiff or sore muscles the day after, but I don't seem to have that problem. How do you know when you are doing enough lifting? The gym has hand weights only up to 20 lbs each. I use those arms and shoulders but do heavier weights on the machines.

I am sure there are many different approaches, but I try to go for a weight that I can do for about 10 reps, feeling a burn on the last three. So if you do a set of ten and it's easy, do extra reps and go heavier the next set. If you only get to 5 and you can't go on, you can go lighter. However, I have also read about people who lift real heavy and only do a few reps. So you have to decide what approach works for you. As long as you are challenging yourself without injury, I don't think you can go wrong!0
