Super Long Road Trip Ahead...

So in about a week I am going to be taking a road trip from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian Rockies. Myself, my husband and our 4 young children. We will be driving for 5 days, about 8 hours a day. My plan is to eat breakfast in the hotel and then pack snacks and lunches that we can eat in the car. Fruit, nuts, veggies, cheese, etc. I don't want to have to waste time sitting in restaurants and my kids don't really care for restaurant food anyway. I also plan to work out in the hotel fitness centers either after the kids go to bed or early in the morning. If you have any suggestions for good food options to take along let me have them. Also any other travel tips related to staying under calorie goals while on the road would be greatly appreciated!

Drink lots of water. I don't imagine that car travel is as dehydrating as flying, but it is even more tiring. Stay hydrated! Get sufficient walking breaks and enjoy your trip!0

We drove from Houston to New York last summer. I planned very much the same way you're doing. Knowing we would stop to eat at restaurants, though, I planned ahead on that, too. I had the restaurants picked out and knew what I was going to order. Kept track of the calories so I would know how much I had the rest of the day. The toughest part for me on road trips is the in-car munchies!!!!0

Stop every 2 - 3 hours if for no other reason than potty breaks and getting those legs moving! If you don't, they'll stiffen pretty badly.
Drink lots of water and/or seltzer. For snacks, 100 calorie packs of pretzels are good. I also recommend Mrs. Mays dehydrated fruit packs if you can find them. We get our from our local BJs. Really tasty and only around 40 calories. For fruit, don't bring bananas - the skins can get pretty stinky! Bring microwave popcorn and pop a couple bags in the hotel in the morning before you leave- good for munching throughout the day. Bring along a shaker of garlic powder for a nice change to regular pop corn. For the kids, buy small boxes or pouches of juice and freeze them in the hotel fridge overnight - will help them to be colder during the day.
Good luck!0 -

We take a cooler (can always refreeze ice packs in hotel fridge over night or refill with ice from the hotel). You can take grapes, carrots and other fruits/vegetables that are good cold. You can keep them in the cooler during the trip and in the hotel fridge during the night. It's also easy to restock these items as grocery stores are everywhere and some gas stations/mini marts are also stocking them. For bananas, apple cores, etc. you can bring a big zip lock bag to put in the peels/cores/etc. solving the "stink" problem. You can then empty and wash out the bag at the hotel, or bring a bag for every day.
For non-fridge stuff, what do you all normally snack on? You just take what you normally eat and make travel packs. For instance you can use baggies or reusable containers. Then bring the box of, let's say, crackers and raisins with you. Each night you wash & refill each individuals' snack cup. Then fill it up with their allotted amount of cracker & raisin mix.
Each day everyone gets a certain amount for snacks, let's say a piece of fruit, a veggie mix and a cracker pack. For each snack time they get to choose which item they want to eat (that gives them a choice of which one they are in the mood for at the time and also prevents one person from eating all of one item = no fights).
For lunches on the go, see if you can plan a road side stop. Then you can have a car side picnic. Gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs, etc. You can pre-make sandwiches, salads, etc. the night before and keep them in a separate cooler in the back of the car. If you want to eat fresh foods every day you will either have to take a lot with you and replenish along the way or make a daily shopping trip. Just take that into consideration and plan that into your schedule and find out where the stores will be in location to your hotels.0 -
Great advice! When we take trips we usually do like others have mentioned - bring portioned out snacks and food, and try to choose restaurants ahead of time if possible..0
