Rollerblading!

Does anyone else out there rollerblade/roller skate?
It's GREAT for toning your legs, and burns a lot of calories too!

I do, but it's more the aggressive skating I do, where you break bones trying grinds and gaps.

    lol

I don't but i'm going to live with a family in Annecy, France for 3 months this summer who have suggested I pick it up because apparently it's really popular there!
I tried rollerblading when i was younger just for fun but i would really like to find a way of doing it to improve my fitness.
Any tips/advice on how to get started?

I would love to, but i have no idea where I would do it :-( the nearest two areas with a decent amount of hard paths (rather than mud tracks and country lanes) are full of kids and their skates, I can just imagine the comments when a tubby 26 year old comes wobbling past them on blades lol

First of all, invest in a decent pair! you can definitely tell the difference between a cheap pair, and a decent one. start just going down your road(unless it's a busy one.. i live in a cul de sac so it's fine for me) and just go slow but steady! stand like a ballerina(the feet turned out!) and bend your knees. slowly push one foot out, and try to glide. it may take a while to learn, but if you try at least 10 minutes a day you'll have it in no time!

Should just go for it. Start off on small curbs, etc and then just progress up from there. When you start you can just pad up and completely protect every part that's going to get bashed and progress from there.

There are loads of female aggressive skaters out there.

Jenna Downing, Fabiola da Silva, Rosie O Donoghue to name but a few. :)

First you need different skates. Small hard wheels. Possibly chassis with grind plate.
Regular wheels are too big and soft.

Aggressive is a lot of short burst kind of stuff, like sprinting. Lots of starts and stops. I doubt it would burn anywhere near the calories of just rollerblading fast down the street.

Rosie is pretty awesome. You'll need to get a pair of aggressive skates.

Are you in the UK? If so I can give you links to some shops via PM and also recommend some relatively cheap starter skates.

If you are also in the UK, I can try and source some local parks or skaters that could help introduce you to the local skate scene.

Just remember everyone starts at the beginning at some point so don't feel embarrassed to be the new girl.
