more catholic than the pope

so i see a lot of threads here about things that piss you off at the gym, or at the pool, or where ever you are working out or living life.
but what about those people that are too strict with the rules?? you know, being more catholic than the pope.
for instance yesterday, during my bike ride, i was on the bike path along side a road, and in the opposite direction came another cyclist. he started to signal to me with one arm to the other side of the street. i passed him without a single exchange of words. there was no bike path on the other side of the street.
let me explain. new york city is becoming increasingly bike-friendly. bike paths are popping up all over, but their are rules. for instance, bike paths are one direction only, and whether you are on one or not, you should be going with the flow of traffic. i actually normally follow this rule, but due to extenuating circumstances, i had to detour of my regular route. if their is a bike path, i'd rather be on that, knowing that motorists will know it's there and therefore avoid it.
what about you? anyone you know a stickler for the rules? they re-rack other peoples weights at the gym??? go on an OCD fueled cleansing spree on a cardio machine?

There are rules for safety reasons. I see no problem with the other cyclist signaling you that you were going against "bike traffic". Not sure that makes him "more Catholic than the pope".0 -

I know exactly what you mean. There are plenty of people around here that act that way. At the gym, at work, even at the grocery store! Who the hell cares if I put a box of cereal back on the shelf with the label backwards? It's in the right spot! Sheesh!0

A guy I work with will not drive even ONE mile over the speed limit. I twitch and get hives when I have to drive anywhere with him!0

There are rules for safety reasons. I see no problem with your co-worker obeying traffic laws and abiding by the speed limit. Not sure that makes him "more Catholic than the pope".

I came from a strict Catholic family with both parents active in church but honestly talking about religious stuff really pisses me off. As for following the rules, well of course we have to abide by it however there's no need to do micromanaging. I hate it as well.0

I was in a situation like that on a bike path - rather, there was only one on the side I was on (going with traffic) and there was a biker coming toward me. It was awkward and I ended up moving in to the lane since no one was coming. Not sure what I would have done if I were on the other side - I did make sure to take another route on the way back, though, since I then knew about it.
There's a blurry line around bending the law from the letter and what kind of situation it could pose. Some are more dangerous than others.0 -

I can I please point out that the saying "more Catholic than the Pope" has nothing to do with religion but rather just means someone who adheres so closely to the rules that they follow it even more closely than the authority on the subject?0

ETA: I never said he was "more Catholic than the pope" anyway. I was giving an example of extreme rule followers. That was the game here; no?0 -

First off, cook ticker - love it.
Secondly, I've always been the type to walk on the grass and not on the sidewalk and ask forgiveness rather than permission. E.g., I roll through stop signs all the time, if there's no one else at the intersection - and I'm always baffled when I'm behind someone who comes to a full stop and SITS THERE for 3-5 seconds at an empty intersection before moving ahead. The point of a stop sign is to make sure, at a busy intersection, that everyone gets to go, and that no one is made to wait a really long time before they can be on their way. If there's no one there, you really don't have to completely stop your car! (Unless there's a cop nearby with a quota to fill...)0 -

Just possibly the person who is getting paid minimum wage to face those shelves :grumble: :grumble: :grumble:
