I've never been a runner, but decided I wanted to be one back in January. I started the Couch to 5k (c25k) program and it worked great for me! You can see an overview of the program here: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml
Basically it gets you from the couch, or being a non-runner, to be able to run a 5k distance without stopping in about 9 weeks. It starts with intervals of walking and running, and gradually moves you up to more running as the weeks progress.
I ran my first 5k race on Memorial Day weekend and loved it! I'm currently using a 10k running program to increase my distance, and I'm looking for more races to enter - I'm hooked.
Check out the site, then if you have an iPod or smart phone, you can download an app which takes you through the whole program, giving you prompts of when to walk, when to run, etc. I used c25kFREE from Zen Labs and it worked great. There are a bunch of apps out there, some free, some cost a buck or two.

I second Couch to 5K. I'm on week 7 and am running for 25 mins straight and already covering 5K. I was never a runner so I feel an amazing sense of accomplishment. I also really enjoy running outside, which I never thought I would say.
AmyRhubarb can I ask what 10K program you are using? I'd like to move on to another program after completing the Couch to 5K?0 -
I was gonna say the same thing...I start my C25K journey on Monday...wanna do it 2gether?0

Zen Labs has a 10k app, so I went with that since I used their c25k app. It picked up right where c25k left off & was free. I just searched for 10k in my app store - it's called 10k Trainer Free.I've never been a runner, but decided I wanted to be one back in January. Get fitted for a pair of running shoes that are comfortable and match your gait.
Start a program such as Couch to 5k or one from Hal Higdon.
I use a daily running log, www.runningahead.com
Strava and MapMyRun are both great free android phone apps, they keep track of mileage, pace and calories burned.
Don't increase your weekly mileage any more than 10%.
Look for a local running club.
Have fun! Running ROCKS! See you on the road! Good luck!0
