I had the copper IUD (coil) fitted last Tuesday, I had no pain for 2 days, then became sore, for the last 2 days I have been in total and utter agony. Doctor said my womb is trying to expel it as its a foreign body, and to see if it gets better over the weekend. I have a very high pain threshold and its unlike me for anything to put me out of action, but this is unreal. Its the only form of contraception I am allowed (no hormones) as I had liver tumors caused by contraceptives so I'd rather keep it in if possible, but cannot put up with this much longer! Anyone had a similar experience? How long did it last?
Many thanks,

If it were me I would go to the emergency room or a patient first place. The IUD could have been put in wrong or could have perforated the uterine wall. If your body sees it as a foreign object and is trying to expel it I can't see that getting any better. It would be like having a transplant and your body rejecting it. The longer you wait the worse it could get. Hope you feel better soon!0

I agree with getting it looked at ASAP. Maybe it is fine, but it would be better to check and know that than to wait around through the weekend and be worse off. And if your doctor doesn't like you having someone else check it I'd suggest finding a new doctor, but that's just me. I hope you start feeling better soon!0 -
Yep, just to the ER to make sure it is still in place. It probably is though.
I have Mirena and I had moderate pain (but nothing Advil couldn't handle) for about 3 weeks after it was put in. About a week after was the worst --I had severe cramping and bleeding for 2 days. But it was not a constant pain - off and on.0 -
I had the copper "T" IUD for years and never had a bit of trouble --- except the day it was inserted (ouwee!) and the day it was removed (not long ago and not awful - little ouchie. Get to another doctor ASAP!0

The body is going to try to expel it no matter what. Your uterus knows it's a foreign body so regardless of it being placed wrong or right your uterus will contract to try to expel it until it gets accustom to having it placed. Did you doctor take an ultrasound to make sure it was placed correctly? I got the Paragard IUD inserted in September and I cramped for 3-4 days then I was okay. My doctor also did a vaginal ultrasound immediately after placement to make sure it was correct and another one a month later to make sure it didn't move.0

I had my first IUD put in after my son was born on 2007. It was always jabby and painful. Then it came out on its own like 4 weeks later. My body expelled it. Then in 2010 I was having female issues and ended up being put under to have a d&c and at that time she placed the mirena IUD. I have had it in for two years now with no problems at all. Good luck:)0

I LOVE my Mirena! I've used it for the past 10 years.0 -

I would say go somewhere and get it checked just to be safe, did you ever feel your strings after you first got it? You can somewhat check yourself to see if its still in place or not. I had mild cramping for about a week with my mirena but nothing I couldn't handle with some advil, because your body is going to try to get rid of it because it doesn't belong. I would go get it checked to be safe though, you don't want to mess up your ability to have children in the future0

almost sounds like contractions (my contractions when giving birth felt like pms cramps but much much worse), like your uterus is trying to expel it. I agree go to the ER and have it checked out.0 -

I've checked the strings and its still in place so I am not worried about that, seems the doctor was probably spot on with saying my body is rejecting it! Just wondering how long it will go on for... X0 -
Severe sharp pain could also mean its come out and is pushing on or puncturing your uterus. Nothing a quick ultrasound can't find. I say better safe than sorry. Ouch!!0

I love mine too! No periods, no cramps anymore -- no worries about pills or condoms breaking. LOVE IT.0
