Hello--Almost a year post-op L4 L5 discectomy...tired of my workout routine..I walk and do elliptical but need to step it up...I have so much drive but my body doesn't work with it which is soo frustrating. I was thinking about starting Jillian Michael's 30 day shred...do you think this would be a good idea for someone with my kind of back issues. Ive talked to a few people in the gym who are post-op 3-10 years and they are running and lifting. I'm sooo scared to touch any of that stuff..and still do not bend over or really even in fear it could re-herniate! Any thoughts from personal trainers or physical therapists would be great..or even if you have had successful back surgery. Many thanks!

Hi there :)I just finished the 30 Day Shred last Saturday! My husband needs back surgery badly! My step mother had the surgery my husband needs and my brother just had surgery similar to yours. He is a tree surgeon and is back at climbing, cutting, lifting heavy, ect. DO NOT LIMIT YOURSELF!!! You will never strengthen your body if you do not at least try. Strengthening is going to be very important so that you do not injure yourself again! I would say go for it and just be sure to use proper form. Anything that is too difficult, follow the girl who is doing modified versions of the exercises or just replace it with something that does not hurt you. For example, some of the abdominal exercises on the floor make my hip pop since I had my third baby, I just do crunches instead during that part! Improvise where you have to but do not be afraid of what has not happened yet!

I was pretty much confined to my bedrood . It was a very bad time of life for me. Surgery gave me my life back. I deal with permenant numbness, and tolarable back "irritations" always. That was seven-eight years ago now. I went to far a time or two. I lifted a 3/4 inch 4x8 sign over my head several times one day and went down for a good month. Ya know, I considered never lifting heavier then a milk jug.... But, I came to this, I have to push to know how far I can go. Over the years I have learned my new back. I run, lift weights, hike etc.( streatching does wonders) People who meet me are surprised I have had surgery and still have problems that was not fixed. I am strong. I work and play hard. I am really glad I chose to push a little more over the years. I don't walk around with signs over my head anymore. If I need help lifting or moving something, I get it. Listen to your body. But don't let the pain tell you what to do. My body told me I would end up laying in a bed urinating in a garbage can if I pushed it. My brain said, toteing plywood signs over your head was stupid and prolly what helped get you here in the first place. My heart is with you here. Take care.:flowerforyou:

Hey :) I haven't had surgery but I had a very bad neck/ back injury several years ago that still gives me fits quite often.

I am doing the shred but I made some modifications. I know for hardcore fitness people it may not be ok but I'm keeping up with it and still pushing myself.

Because mine is upper back and neck, I do pushups at the wall (standing) and I do the ab work on an exercise ball. So I'm not doing exactly what they're doing and I know that but I am definitely feeling it and I'm not hurting myself in the process.
