Help, please

I've been here for about a week. I have a long way to go before hitting goal. In this week, I've drastically modified my eating habits and have stayed away from sugar, too much sodium, great reduction in carb intake, more fiber etc.

I lost 11 pounds in a week but most of it is water weight. It may sound like a big amount but heavy set people tend to lost large amounts when they first start out.

The problem is that I feel weak, lightheaded, unenergized and plain sleepy. Is this because of the shift my body is experiencing in terms of a different type of eating?

I stay around 1200-1300 (when I could be eating more as per MFP) but it's only because I'm pretty full after all the salads, fruits, and protein intake.

Unhealthy carbs were/are my weakness but when I stay away from them, my appetite decreases.

I am not working out as yet, just some walking.

Does anybody have support, thoughts, experiences to share?

Depending on your height, you might not be eating enough. Few people feel good on 1200-1300 calories and those who do are generally very short in stature. Also, if your diet changes included a major decrease in caffeine or sugar, then you may be suffering the symptoms of withdrawal for those things (and it that case it will go away with time).

I've been here about 5 weeks and I've only lost 14lbs I started at 215 and I'm trying to lose 65 but my first week I felt kinda crappy also. I have noticed that the days that i ate a little more I felt better and had more energy.

Eat as many calories as MFP tells you to eat. You don't want your body to go into starvation mode. Losing a lot will take a while but if you take it step by step you can do it. Just don't rush it. X

Try getting in a few extra calories with nuts or trail mix. I found it helped with feeling sluggish and gave me the extra that I need.

How much is MFP telling you should be your daily calorie allotment? How tall are you/current weight?

When did you start eating fewer carbs? How many net carbs per day are you consuming?

I do low carb, (50g - 75g net carbs per day), and the headache is really, really common in the beginning. Mine went away after 3 or 4 days, I think. The carb cravings subsided by the end of the second week. Eating the extra protein really helped.

I have found that DRASTIC changes in diet are not a successful way to lose weight. You feel horrible, you get discouraged and you quit. I started my diet at 252 pounds. I reduced my calorie intake to about 1800-2000 a day to start. I really reduced portion sizes, but didn't really change WHAT I was eating at first. I've been losing about 2-3 pounds a week since I started (which I think is awesome considering I haven't worked out once! But I do have a job that requires a lot of walking!). But as time has progressed, I find myself eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, less fats. I would say the only thing that I have cut out is fried foods because that extra 300 calories of grease just doesn't taste good enough to take that kind of calorie hit. Now I'm down to 213 and I feel better, but I'm still obese, so of course I'm not going to feel like a thin person does! If I would feel as good at 213 and I will at 150, then what would be the point of losing all this weight! And your body will go through an adjustment period, it's more drastic at first because the changes you made are drastic, but it will start to even out. However, once you get to that even out period you will probably also plateau in weight loss and have to make some minor changes and go through it all over again. it's just your body going through food withdrawals. Withdrawal works like this: when you don't have a substance, you get the opposite effect as it provided you. Like people that use cocaine use it for energy and speed, but when they come down they are exhausted without it. Cigarettes relieve your 'stress', but as you soon as you don't have one you feel stressed again. It's your minds way of getting what it wants and we have to fight it! That's the only way. So food makes you feel relaxed and happy and content, so without all that high fat and sugar and carbs we will feel run down and a little grouchy and tired. But eventually it will pass! And I can already tell you that the health and wellness benefits you will feel down the road will be worth a few months or a year of withdrawals!

I appreciate your suggestions. I totally feel like crap because of the pendulum swing from too much to so much less. I'm 5'3" short :D

I wasn't able to go for my walk yesterday from the enormous sense of fatigue and today, unless my energy level picks up, it might be the same.

I think I'm being a bit impatient with myself instead of being more nurturing.
  • I'm coming from Weight Watchers and they always taught us that you have to "eat your points" in order to lose. I'm using that lesson and 'eating my calories' that MFP gave me. If you're eating under what MFP gave you, the you may want to eat more but healthy filling foods. Fruits, veggies, yogurt, etc. that may help you feel better.

    Hi Phaedra,

Although I have not had a drastic change in my diet, I found that when I drastically reduced one area of my diet, and my weakness happened to be sugar, that I was dizzy at work, light headed and tired (If I bent down to pick something up, I would get a head rush coming back up, if I slightly turned my head side to side I felt like I was on a roller coaster!, etc).

If you are use to eating a lot of sugar everyday, this drastic reduction alone would be enough to cause you to experience what you are feeling. I am not a doctor, but I have read enough books on diet and nutrition, a lot of them based around sugar and the nations addition to sugar. Coming down "off" of it causes you to experience these withdrawal symptoms.

You will find those symptoms will start to go away as your body adjusts. I hope this helps at all and I wish you much luck along your journey to a new you!!

I just read in a book that people do often feel like that for the first week or so at a new calorie level. So I think it's normal. Re-address your calories if you're going under MFP recs or if the symptoms persist.

It sounds like you need to be sure that you are getting a balanced diet. Fruits and veg and protein are great but you need to be sure that you are getting all of the nutritional requirements too. Are you getting your calcium and other nutrients?

If you are dizzy or light headed, you may want to evaluate what you have eaten and what you are missing from your diet.

Good luck. I know this seems difficult, but once you get the hang of it, it just starts working!!

5'3", about 100 pounds to lose, daily carb allotted by MFP is 230 but I've barely made it to 200. MFP says eat approx 1790 cals but the highest I've gone is 1300 because eating more protein, vegetables and fruits, plus extra water satiates me. I think when I start working out, I will automatically feed the need for more food.

Maybe I need to eat some more.

Edited to add: I found a website that basically adds to what all of you are saying!
