Hey guys

Is it many people here that eat plantains? What do u think of them?

my dad use to cook curried plantains when i was a kid and ive seen them in the shop for years so i bought a couple last week and just fried them in olive oil and it taste really good. i use it instead of potato. they are pretty starchy but good calorie value in my opinion as i need some carbs because of all the exercise i do.

Love 'em! I just always forget to buy them and cook them. I prefer them green over the ripe ones though!
  • thats nice, how do you cook them?

I should eat them more often

This seems to say they are good, but might have sugar issues

I don't eat them myself, but I fry them up for my boyfriend and he'll usually eat them with fried fish and blended tomato and habenero, and sardines. Or with a form of refried beans (not the canned stuff).

They are yummy but very fattening if you are frying. I usually wait till they are ripe and then boil them. I usually eat it with brown rice and lentils. I won't fry them, once in a while isn't bad but def fattening that way.

I too love Plantain chips. I've been wanting to make them myself, but have yet to attempt it.
  • true about the frying.. maybe i should bake/grill them in the oven, its almost the same thing.

I grew up eating both green and ripe plantains. I was looking at them today at the store thinking itd be so great to eat "tostones" which are sort of like fried plantain chips. Alas--too much oil in that. My Dad used to just like them boiled and then he ate them with rice and beans. Not my favorite way. They have a lot of Vitamin A, C, B6 and potassium but also are high in sugar.

Its been a while... but last time I made them ripe I baked it with skin and all. They were delicious! I forgot for how long and the temp too. I noticed they were high calorie & stopped making them. I had them cut up on a salad with romaine, beans, 1 crumbled bacon, tomato. Olive oil & white balsamic for dressing.

Grew up eating plaintains (Dominican family), luv them! My fave way is mashed up (like mashed potatoes) we call it "mangu" with eggs. Some people eat them with frying cheese or salami. I try not to eat them too much maybe once or twice a month cuz i get a craving for them.

My husband, who is from the Dominican Republic, introduced me to plaintains. We usually eat them green. Mangu is my favorite. Boil the bananas and mash as you would mashed potatoes, using a little butter and I will add back some of the water I boiled them in, to make it smooth. Then saute sliced red onion in a little olive oil with salt and vinegar added to taste. Pour on top of the Mangu. Absolutely delicious! I'm sure it's not the best for you but oh so good for that special treat.

i'm not a fan of plantains but my sister loves them. Here in jamaica plantain is typical breakfast food and sides on meals throughout the day.

    Fried
Can be fried ripe or green. We normally cut it in small round pieces flatten it then fry it then put salt on top the green ones

    Boiled
Cut in big chunks (cut the whole plantain in 3 or 4 chunks) and boil. In jamaica we normally boil it with other food such as sweet potato, irish potato, green banana, dumplins etc

    Baked
Just put it in the oven with skin on and bake for a couple minutes

I'm sure there are other ways but here are just a few
  • i thought the calorie value for them was pretty good.. isnt it like 130 calories in 100grams?
one plantain is about 100g and that fills me up if i have it with some meat and salad./

I loooooovvve tostones and platanos! Totally addicted!!

Looked them up to see the nutritional data. Only 120 cals for tostones, about double that for platanos maduras. Probably more sugar as they are more ripe. Not bad on the tostones at all.

I slice them and bake them in the oven with a little sugar free maple syrup drizzled over. I like 'em dark and crispy on top! Also good baked in coconut milk.
