Rock of Ages??

Okay, so as SOON as I saw commercials for this movie, I knew I HAD to see it. I LOVE 60s, 70s and especially 80s rock. However, considering how damned expensive the theaters are, I decided to do some research on it first and surprisingly came across a LOT of bad reviews, which almost changes my mind about wasting the money to see it. Of course, I hate taking other peoples' words for movies, but if there are THAT many bad reviews, it must be somewhat true, right? lol

Has anyone seen the movie yet? What are YOUR reviews about it? The acting, the story line, the music, etc. Someone make me excited again to see this movie!! lol

It was ok. I liked the music but some of the acting was awful, and the plot was just ehhh. Tom Cruise carried the movie. Music involved a lot of Journey and Poison.

Saw it yesterday. I loved it - but I graduated HS in 1991 - so I love all that music. It's a bit cheesy - but I think that was the point.

I graduated high school in 1988 so loved the music. I am not particularly fond of Tom Cruise but he was fantastic. Not that impressed with Julianne Hough. It reminded me of the original Footloose...

i saw it. It wasn't bad for a musical. I think they mixed the songs well. It was kinda funny. There were cheesy parts. I would wait till it comes out on DVD or your movie channel. If you really wanted to go then go. I am indifferent. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it.

I haven't seen it, but I graduated in '91. Must be the "perfect" age range to enjoy it because all of my fb friends that have seen it liked it. They mostly range from '88-'91.

It was awful, I thought it would be about the music, it wasn't. Maybe it didn't suit my "taste" in movies. But there was nothing tasteful about it.

I've seen the movie not good and not bad its ok. I would suggest just to watch in when it comes out on dvd!!
  • Thought that parts of it were okay, parts of it were lousy and parts were just plain absurd, but I was a fan of all of the music and owned much of it in its original form (I graduated in 1980). I think it's gonna be right there with Grease 2, though, so you might listen to the person who suggested waiting until it comes to DVD.

I haven't seen it yet, and I probably will when it gets to the $3 theater near me, but as a rule: movies based on Broadway musicals are generally terrible (hard for film to capture the magic and energy of a live show like that), and Broadway musicals based on a Jukebox are also generally pretty blah... which makes this a movie based on a pretty blah source...

Then again, I tend to be SUPER critical!

I've seen the musical twice (Chicago & Milwaukee) and thought it was great. Putting it on the big screen though....No thanks.

I saw it twice at the movies, but that's because I loved the music in the movie. I thought the stage musical was, by far, better than the movie. I guess I liked watching good looking people do daggy 80's.

I was born in '83, but a hard core lover of 80's music, so I was pleasantly surprised with some of the actors being able to sing.

TBH if I judged movies on their IMDB rating or the reviews that they recieved I wouldn't have watched 75% of the movies that I have in my collection.

I think I'm a sucker for bad movies though so...

I absolutely loved it!!! Normally hate Cruise but he was awesome, plus it's got Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin! It doesn't take itself too seriously and has lots of fantastic music and awesome clothes! I wasn't born til '86 but I'm obsessed w/ 80's rock and any film that has Bon Jovi, Poison, Def Leppard etc songs in it is def gonna be a winner in my book!

I don't like Tom Cruise either, but I though he was great in this movie. When I started watching it, I hated it. By the end though I loved it. Yes it's cheesy, yes the acting is terrible, however it is funny and if you like 80's 'rock' you will love it.

I saw the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was funny and cheesy, and seeing Tom Cruise play such a random role was interesting. I'd recommend it and see it again.

I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it!

The music is terrific, the chemistry between Russell Brand (who i usually try to avoid) and Alec Baldwin is very good, and Tom Cruise puts in an amazing performance.

The female characters were weak (with the exception of a great cameo from Mary J Blige, and its good to see Catherine Z-J get her dancing shoes on again)

On the downside, the plot is paper-thin, and some of the jokes are very very tasteless.

I forgot to mention the best parts of the movie besides Cruise was the monkey and the random cameos of 80's rockers in the crowd shots.

I LOVED IT! It's 80's rock music and since I graduated in 1985 it brought back a lot of memories. Also, I hate musicals but this one was great. For me, the music made the whole movie. If you didnt enjoy big hair bands (Journey, Foreigner, BonJovi, White Snake etc) then you probably wont like this movie.

Like the guy from Skid Row? That was awesome!
