Perhaps this is a weird question, but I've never been much of a nut person until the last year or so.

When weighing pistachios..do you weigh them in the shell, or after they are shelled?

Either. I think MFP has them listed both ways.

Either. I think MFP has them listed both ways.

the ones I have are from a store called Aldi, the brand is southern grove. It says the serving is 28grams or 49 pieces...but there was far less than 49 pieces (which i know is an estimate). That is what made me think i was supposed to shell them and weigh them.
  • You can calculate it either way. Shelled pistachios are double the calories as weighing them in the shell. For example, 1/2 cup in the shell is 160 calories. 1/2 cup shelled are 320 calories. It's not necessary to weigh them if you know a few measurements.

Depends. If you buy them in the shell, the nutrition facts are probably for in the shell.

If you buy them sans shell (already shelled) the nutrition facts are probably for the bare nuts.

The ones I buy (from Sam's Club) come both shelled (bare nuts) and un-shelled (in the shell), and are 160 cal/160 sodium per 1/4 cup.

Unless you plan on eating the shells (not advisable) don't include the weight / volume of the shells in your calculations. Hope this helps. btw-they're better (IMO) than most other nuts.

I use the MFP listing that does the calculation based on the number of nuts.

    Grom pistachio gelato is amazing.

Pistachio without shell is 562 calories per 100g.
    See the excellent USDA database:
    http://ndb.nal.usda.gov/ndb/foods/show/3747

That's in line with most entries on this website.
Nuts are calorie dense so weigh them if you can. Volume measures aren't accurate.

i decided to just measure out 1oz in the shell...ate them, and then weighed the shells and subtracted the weight of the shells from the weight of the nuts.

There are different calorie counts for shelled and unshelled. Just use which one is appropriate.

I purchase shelled ones and I weigh according to the package and log them that way.
