So I have decided that this fall is when I will run a 5k... Cool right?!
Yea umm I havent ran since I was probably 16 years old and that was a good 10 years ago.. and im scared and doubting myself...
Im trying to figure out what I need to get done by the end of the summer to get myself in the best shape physically and mentally...
Has anyone done a 5k they can give me advice on how I should prepare for this? Like I said its been a good 10 years since ive ran and that was just for fun like running around and competing with friends who can make it up the block the fastest lol.
Right now im at 180lbs..:blushing: im hoping before I run this in the fall i can be somewhere in the 160lbs or less.. is this possible?
Gosh my head is running a million miles a minute...
Any advice would be great... And im thinking training for this will really give me the overhaul I need....
xoxo

couch to 5k is a good program to follow, i followed one which is a 10 week program it blueprints walking and running time
it starts with 5:00 warmup , then 10x1 min run /1 min walk and gradually increases to running 5k after 10 weeks
you will need to run outside at least 1x a week if not all the time .. just so that your body gets used to the pavement.
you will do fine dont stress
this is the link on the sheets i posted by my desk
http://running.competitor.com/2012/06/training/beginners-10-week-5k-training-plan_37775
start at a slow pace and train for speed at the end of the run , i used the last .25- .5 to do sprinting and speed training , i know if i didnt it early in the run i would run out of gas.0 -
Yes, I too recommend the Couch to 5K program. Take it easy and listen to your body. I've you're not comfortable advancing to the next week in the program stay where you are for another run or 2. I've now helped 3 of my friends go from complete non-running couch potatoes to people who enjoy running 3-4 days a week. ANYONE can become a runner if they are patient with themselves.
Don't run too fast - you should always be able to breathe! Follow the program to the best of your ability and as I said above, listen to your body. You have plenty of time and that program builds in small intervals to avoid injury and to make this process as enjoyable as possible.
Best of luck!0 -

there are stores that will fit you for the correct sneakers , they will record you running and then fit you for the correct sneakers. they will usually sell you high end sneakers , you can either get them there or look for a cheaper pair online once you have your size and fit .. spend a few dollars its worth not having pain , spurs and cramps
ive heard of these stores but i swear I cant find one anywhere0 -
First off, totally agree on couch to 5k. It's awesome!
Secondly, while I fully agree it's best to get fitted for shoes, I haven't. What I do is shop for shoes when my feet are already tired, sore and possibly a bit swollen from being on my feet all day.
The shoes that feel better than the ones I'm wearing are the winners. Asics work best for me. They make me feel like my feet are being hugged. But there's no one brand that will work for everyone.0 -
someone just told me the name yesterday ! damn brain , i will find out
just txt the guy who was talking to me
road runner sports is one of them , i know there are more0 -

I stared the couch to 5k a few months ago and did my first 5k on June 9 in 39:40. I am continuing to use it to work on speed now. If you have a smartphone, I would reccomend downloading the app. It will give you audio cue's on when to walk and run and it also allows you to play your own music playlist.
I also downloaded the map my run app which will track your route, distance and pace. I have mine set to give me an update every 1/2 kM.
As far as a place to analize your running I would google "Running stores in Long Island" there are a handful you could go to.
Have fun and be safe!0 -
Get yourself a pair of reebok realflex, a pair of compression shorts to wear under and soccer shorts for over. Then put them all on and just run. Oh, might wanna put on a sports bra and top too, then run!
Start out with 1 mile. 1/2 jog 1/2 walk and work up from there. When you can complete a mile running, then go to 1.5 miles. So on and so on. Thats what I did.
You will do great, I am sure of it! :flowerforyou:0 -
Couch to 5K and get yourself fitted properly with running shoes. What might work for one person might not work for another. I have Brooks Ghost 5 shoes which I love, but my friend swears by her Asics.0

Here's a list of stores in LI that will help you find some good running shoes. You can get fitted and then may be go to the outlets to get that pair for less?0
