How Far Can/Do You Ride?

I'm trying to become a bona fide cyclist. I'm getting there. Not-really-slowly, but surely! I wanna be able to say "Yeah, man, I'm a cyclist." I remember when I could barely ride a couple miles without calling it a day, but within the past week, I have beaten my record not once, but twice.
13.67 to 15.33 to 16.09 miles!
Seriously feeling like a badass.
I want to join this cycling club in my area, but I want to be able to go 28 miles.

That's amazing! Does your butt hurt?0

NO but my man parts get a tad numb after 60 miles or so0 -
I do a lot of spin class, but obviously I can't count that.
I've only been on one real bike ride and it was 28 miles. Bike shorts definitely help (with the padded butts). What with all the strength training and spin classes I'd been doing, I felt perfectly fine the next day except for some mild soreness in my butt. But for never doing a long bike ride and suddenly doing 28 miles, not too shabbyI just need to do it more often now.

ive gotten used to cycling to the point I dont even wear my padded shorts if im doing anything under 15 or 20 miles your butt gets used to it0

The most I've done in one ride was 35 miles. On week nights I'll do 10-15 miles through Denver. It ends up being a good workout because of stopping and starting at red lights and what not. Also, I weighed my bike and it's 35 lbs! I'd love to buy a road bike but it seems like everytime I'm ready to do it something else comes up that I have to spend money on.
Keep on ridin'0 -
26.5 miles on Saturday & sometimes on Sunday. Hoping my new bike will help me with my distance, currently riding a hybrid mountain/road bike, but getting a pure road bike within the next week or two (waiting for the shipping notice.)0

i just started biking too. i bought a cushy seat but my pelvic bones go numb and ache. do i just suck it up and get used to it or is there a better solution?0

Yep, that's a good ride.
I have one of those water back pack things where I can drink and drive....:drinker:
I never thought of spiking my water...hmmm....
Anyway, I try to ride an hour, and it feels GREAT!0 -
I'm mainly an off-road cyclist but I just bought a "fast hybrid" which has roadie wheels and frame but flat bars and disc brakes. I bought it for commuting to work which is a 30 mile round trip. 32 miles my longest ride on it but I've only been on it twice (had it a week).
On my mountain bike at the moment 20 miles is about my limit off road, would like to increase that.
With your roadie make sure you get it set up right for your height/frame/riding position, or it can really play havoc with your hip and knee joints. Enjoy the new bike!0 -
I've been riding for about 3 years now and I did my first Century (100 miles) about a month ago. I got another Century coming up this Saturday. Over time your butt will get used to it, although towards the end of 100 miles my butt also started getting sore. It is also good to stand and pedal every once in a while to help prevent soreness.
Typically I ride 3-4 times during the week during the summer and 1-3 time in the winter. I usually ride in a group ride 2x per week and once by myself. Each ride is usually about 20-25 miles.0 -

I ride 10-15 miles on most days, maybe 5 days per week. My longest ride ever (when I was younger) was 80+ miles. That was tough, but I had a junky bike at the time and I think I could do that ride much easier today. I recently rode in a 67 mile ride which did kick my butt because the last 20 miles were into the wind (and it was strong that day). The first 50 miles were just fine.
I have a padded gel seat, and also a gel seat overlay for extra comfort. I don't need bike shorts unless it is a longer ride. But, I also wear bike shorts for those longer rides. I also just changed the angle of my seat, because I was still getting "crotchy". This made a HUGE difference.0 -
My husband rides, he did a 100 mile bike ride the year before last for charity and is doing it again in August. He is 62 but was overtaken at one point by a 79 year old who has done the ride every year for the last 20 years. He felt very humble.
My husband calls guys like that " The Iron Men"0 -
40 miles is the most, and that was on an 80s steel Raleigh mountain bike, lol, not sure how I managed it, given there were so many hills I could have died. I had only been cycling for a matter of a month or so at the time. My bf had told me it was 'only a few miles further' than the usual place I cycled, but his idea of a few miles turned out to be about 11 miles, and I was determined to not turn back. As it turned out, Stockbridge, where I ended up, is rather pretty.
I try and cycle anything from 3 to 6 times a week, and at least an hour, sometimes going for up to 3 hours depending on my energy. I currently have a hybrid that weights almost 15kg and isn't ideal for someone with impaired lung function and hilly areas, but it burns a fair few calories at least and kept my weight down. I have been cycling around a year now.0 -

I went and got fitted for it before ordering, had no idea before then that I needed a large frame. When it gets to the store I get to go in and get set up on it correctly. I got so tired of being passed on my local trail because my bike just *isn't* fast no matter how fast I pedal at times. Plus, I just want to go farther in less time and have 70 miles of paved trail to do it on.0 -
My longest ride (in recent years) is a charity ride I do in September - 100km (about 61 miles)
My bike commute to work is 19km each way and my target is 2 days per week.0 -
this year 40 miles so far is my longest ...on my road bike, plus did a ride with hubby on mt bikes for 24 miles...
longest ever was 112 miles in 2001 for ironman0 -
I try to ride twice a week for about 20 miles. I have ridden over 40 miles many times. Kansas City has a Tour d' BBQ 62 mile ride for the Livestrong Foundation. I've done that twice. It stops at six different BBQ joints around the city. It's quite a party.0

I rode 100 miles just yesterday! My longest ride is ODRAM, the One Day Ride Across Michigan (I'm an organizer this year--you should do it, it's awesome!), which is 147-152 miles, depending upon who you ask (my computer tends to err on the low side).
Cycling is great. If you start with a moderate base of fitness you can progress really fast, both in terms of speed and distance. It's a really social activity, too.0 -
My longest was a charity ride a few weeks back, 132miles with 11,000ft of climbing (and descending :-) ) I usually cycle to work in the week, which is 50 miles round trip and a Sunday club rub is anywhere between 50 - 80 miles.0

I did a double metric century a few years back. Total for the day was 127 miles in 8.5 hours.
The only bad thing was the wind. I checked weather.com and it was reported we had wind speeds over 30+ mph for THREE STRAIGHT HOURS.0 -
When I started riding, the longest I could go was 10 minutes before my knees hurt really bad. Everybody talks about their butts being the problem, but for me it was my knees. So I had to teach my knees to enjoy cycling as much as the rest of me did. It took a while, but they came around. Now cycling is the easiest task for my knees to perform.
I can go pretty long- my longest this year is about 3.5 hours at a nice solid pace. I've done longer in the past. But I'm happy with this. I usually wear bike shorts, but I'm also comfortable in triathlon shorts, and can ride in those just as long as bike shorts.
I have issues with the family jewels going numb. My tri bike has a special saddle called an Adamo which is designed to help eliminate numbness. It's the cat's pajamas. My cross bike doesn't have one, and every time I ride my cross bike more than an hour, I inevitably end up thinking to myself, "Dude, you REALLY need to get another Adamo!..."
I hope this helps, and it sounds like you're doing spectacularly! Keep pushing that distance, and before too long you'll be going WAY past 28 miles!

I just did my longest single day ride of 75 miles. It felt pretty burly since it was only my third ride in over a year, but it worked out fine.
When I was riding every day I would regularly put in 25 - 30 miles on the local trails.0 -

I just bought a pretty decent used hybrid bike...all the rivers in Los Angeles county are paved over in concrete, and they have jogging/ horseback/ cycling paths on the edges...I've only been on my bike once since I bought it 3 days ago, but I know I'm going to enjoy riding a bike much, much more than sitting on an elipitical machine for an hour watching CNN.
My first ride was 20 miles...I hadn't been on a bike in years and years and years...I really, really enjoyed it. And yes, they seat hurt my butt...but maybe I'll get used to it.0 -
I bike to cross-train every other day (MWF) because my knees can't take day after day of running. I usually do 8 miles Mondays as a recovery from my long run, 8-10 miles Wednesdays, and 12-15 miles Fridays. Not very long, but it ends up being a good 35-60 minute workout and it's helped my knees a ton since I've started biking 2-3 months ago. (And I just recently bought a helmet now that I'm biking outside regularly, so I feel less iffy about going on longer rides in the future. Yay!)0
