So, I'm losing weight according to the scale--it's not been hard really, but I'm young and male, so I guess it is somewhat expected that it might be easy to me. But my scale is really crazy, I can step on it three times and weigh one weight...wait a minute or so, and then weight a totally different weight...
So you are thinking, why don't I take measurements? I've tried, and there doesn't seem to be much difference. I guess I'm losing inches from my ears (actually, considering my ears that would not be a bad thing). Last night, I was looking at shorts online (I have this fantasy where I buy all new clothes, and someone starts to think I am beautiful) and the size chart said that if your waist was this size you needed this size pants--supposedly they correspond exactly. If I measure at the slimmest part of my waist, it is 37 inches. I usually wear a 32-34 in pants, and for most of my life, my pant size has hovered in that area. I thought maybe it was just their sizing, but all the size charts seem to say they are "true" to size. Yeah...right.
I guess I could try pictures, but I think that would probably depress me too--but I guess I can try and see. I just am amazed that someone can lose 20+ pounds and there not be much difference. It makes me feel like I should change my goal to weigh 130 or something--which would probably NOT be healthy for me, or a good look. I guess, given my body type, I should just give up on being thin, and just lift a lot of weights, and become that guy who huge arms and chest and shoulders...AND stomach?

Its water retention/fluctuation throughout the day... pick one time to weigh yourself and stick to it (Mine is first thing in the morning) My weight fluctuates sometimes 7/8lb depending on what i've eaten/drunk/exercised.
Seriously Don't pay attention to daily scale differences or you will go mental..... just log it once a week or less and the difference will become obvious!0 -
oh you probably dont see the difference because you look at yourself every day too........ bless you ignore the scales, post up a few pictures and I'm sure you will see the differences, remember it gets harder as you get closer to your goals and your doing amazingly0

I just bought some new scales as mine told me I was 5 pounds different over night and I don't think I retain 5 pounds of water.
My new scales are wonderful and I am now 14 pounds lighter than the old ones told me I was. It's a very easy fix =p0 -
Honestly, I haven't seen much change--I've almost consistently lost the same amount this entire time. I try to always weigh-in on Tuesdays right after I get up...but on Tuesday there is a 3-4 hour variance of when I wake up--guess I should work on picking an exact time to weigh. And when I tell people I've lost weight in real life, they don't believe me.
Thanks for the suggestions and insights.0 -
I would say sometimes 20 lbs isn't enough to see a big difference depending on your body..I know it wouldn't have been for me. And for the record I think you are a handsome man, and you will one day find that special someone. And a man bulking up some is a good thing, Maybe you should do that and see what life throws at you.0

Try to focus on your accomplishment - 20 lbs. is fantastic!!!! I'm pretty much fixated on the scale too, but I don't take it too seriously. Maybe purchase a new scale and only weigh yourself once in the morning and stay off for the rest of the day. I've found that people don't notice a difference in my weight until I've lost about 25 lbs., but I do! Even now at a weight loss of 17 lbs today I can fit into one size lower and that feels wonderful!
Whatever you choose just don't give up. Every day ounce by ounce your're a little closer to your goal. Friend me if you'd like0 -
I hardly noticed any change in the first 15 pounds - even my clothes fit pretty much the same - but the NEXT 5, 10 and 15 made a WORLD of difference.
Photos really helped me see progress.0 -
Ugh, thank you all so much! I am usually the person who gets upset when people freak out cause they gain a pound, or only lose a half pound or something--sometimes our bodies go back for just a little bit, or stall, or don't change much--but you are still changing, right? As long as you are being somewhat honest with yourself in regards to your eating habits everything should be okay!0

Have you measured your body fat percentage?0
-
I can totally relate to the ear comment, that made me laugh0
-
It's probably just the way your body fat is distributed meaning that whilst you are getting smaller it is not immediately obvious despite your loss.
I am fairly similar. I can weigh anywhere from 180 - 195 lbs and no one bats an eye lid or notices a change. If I start creeping above that eyebrows start raising, below it and I get random women attempting to feed me sugary delights.
I would capitalise on your youth and forget about the scale. Who cares what you weigh if you look fine?
Start lifting those weights my friend. It's one of the best investments you can make along with a solid cardio base.0 -

No, but when I return to university this fall, I plan to--the university offers a free fitness evaluation and ongoing nutrition consultations--I never took advantage (or even paid attention to them) before, but I have every intention of doing so this fall! I think I may meet with a trainer a few times, too. I am super self-conscious about working out and being in the gym--even the idea of meeting with a personal trainer frightens me, but something I want to overcome.
As for "looking fine"--I would say I am one of those people that is usually chided for trying to watch what I eat. Sure, I look pretty okay. But I am still one of those people who is high risk for a plethora of medical conditions, and want to work on the small amount of body fat I have had around my middle to reduce these risks before I get to that age where it is much more difficult to make these kinds of changes. And, I have this dream of being a fashionista. I want to wear knits without fear. I want to wear tank tops. Heck, I want to go swimming without feeling weird about taking my shirt off! Heck, I want to go running with my shirt off down the street! I might even become one of those people who takes their shirts off at the most inappropriate moments (libraries, funerals).0 -
You could of course be one of those people who carries a lot of fat around their internal organs, in which case if your weight loss is from losing that particular fat then you've done your health a lot of good by dropping those pounds, even if they don't show externally.0
-
I say screw the scales focus on your health. That is what I've been doing. Make sure you are eating unprocessed nutritionally dense food. Make sure you are eating plenty of protein. Make sure you are doing cardio exercise for heart health. And by all means lift! You will be amazed at what a difference lifting will do for body composition. Good luck!0

I've had that same problem where the scale will do that to me. I think it could be my floor which is tile. My husband moves the scale around and so if it isn't sitting exactly flat it could read different. It doesn't do it every day but once in a while I have the same thing and so I wouldn't worry about it0

I love your sense of humor!! I have lost 24 pounds this yr and while some people noticed after about 15, more people are noticing in just the last 2 weeks, and I haven't lost any scale weight in like two months! Things are just changing and rearranging! I've lost a majority of that in my upper body. I'm still waiting for my hips, thighs, and lower ab to join the party!
Keep at it, it will happen. And take pics! You don't realize how much change has happened without pics! For example, my profile pic!0 -
My first 20 lbs or so didnt really see much of a difference but after that everyone else started noticing too0

Great job on your weight loss so far! I have been a MFP user (on and off) for a few years now. Whenever I get really stressed out I stop logging because I am a stress eater (a substitute for the stress smoker I used to be) and don't want to hold myself accountable. This time around I have a goal of 40 lbs to lose and am down 7... while the weight isn't dropping as quickly as I'd like (overnight, of course) I am seeing a difference in my body shape.
I looked through your food and exercise diary to figure out why you might not be seeing changes even though you have lost 20lbs. It doesn't look like you have been exercising, or at least haven't logged it lately. It's fine if you choose not to, you can still lose weight and improve your health, but your shape itself will not change.
The second thing I noticed is a lot of prepared food, more specifically, McDonald's. I would really worry about the sodium factors here which will cause major bloating (and lethargy making exercise more difficult, IMO). You want to make sure that you are getting the necessary vitamins and minerals so that your organs are functioning properly , many of these are lost in the over-processing of food so if you're not already taking supplements then I'd encourage those as well. I recently read that magnesium and iodine deficiencies can be the cause of weight gain and many other medical symptoms... I'm in the process of reading up as much as I can on both and hope that others on this site will consider doing the same.
I believe that changing these few things will open up a world of possibilities for your shirtless adventures!!!0 -

Yes, totally agree! I am aware of all those things--hopefully in the fall I will be able to rectify many of them. I am not a person very sensitive to stimuli--like food, supplements, medicines, etc. I apparently have a very high pain tolerance. I'm not very in touch with my body, so sometimes it's hard for me to tell the difference when I make changes, so taking supplements has always been hard for me to justify. I am split on the whole mind-body dichotomy.0 -
First things first--I love you :flowerforyou: ! Hahaha
No, seriously, your sense of humor is great
Do cardio to burn calories immediately, but I'd definitely recommend lifting weights. You can lift weights for quite a long period of time without getting bulky. Getting bulky really requires a lot of effort specifically striving towards that. By lifting you will increase the amount of muscle you have (:noway: duh, I know) but that will enable you to burn more fat throughout the day due to muscle burning more calories than fat. So you'll burn some calories while doing the weight lifting, and increase your overall daily calorie burn once you increase the amount of muscle you have. Muscle is also denser (not heavier as some think..a pound is a pound is a pound) than fat, so the same amount of weight in muscle will take up less room in your body than fat. Make sure you are also getting enough protein--about 1g per every pound you weigh.
Also, make sure you're getting enough water each day. Aim for at least 8 cups but go for more if you can! And try to eat as "clean" as possible--little to no processed foods (this is hard in the beginning but once you get the hang of shopping for them it gets much easier), lots of veggies, and good amount of fruits and whole grains in addition to protein. It also saves time if you cook enough for a few meals at once and then eat them for a few days. By the time I get home from work and finish my workout, it's between 7 and 8pm. I usually do not feel like cooking then! So preparing a few meals in advance has definitely helped me out
And good job on your weight loss! You should still be proud of yourself! I really recomend taking pictures. I knew my body had changed but I didn't realize how much until I took a progress photo! Make sure to really analyze every part of your body--arms, neck, chest, back, waist, legs.....it's easy to give a photo a once over and say there isn't a big change but when you pick your body apart piece by piece (in the good way!) you can really see the changes!0 -
The scale is the devil! Progress pictures definitely help!!!0
-
Yes, I must definitely work on my food preparation skills. And at the beginning I was tracking water intake and doing really good, but I have definitely slacked! I know this sounds crazy, but any tips on taking pictures? Ha. I just realized my camera has a tripod insert on the bottom...that could help.0
-
I love your inspirations! lol. Wow do you really eat McDonald's everyday? I would start tracking sodium also. You could be holding on to a ton of water weight!0
-
Oh stop, you know that you are a total hottie!! Keep up the good work. My only thing is 'maybe', just maybe ... did you wear your clothes baggy because you were self concious about your weight. Maybe people can't tell because you weren't showing off the goods before.
Keep up the good work.0 -

Get a kindly friend to take them for you! Or struggle with a mirror and wiggle around till you get the angle you want!0 -
I probably weigh like 165, just because I eat McD's so much! And yes, almost everyday--it's crazy I know! I guess I don't really worry about sodium and water retention too much, though--right now my blood pressure is amazing, and I know I am losing weight. But it is definitely something I should think about, I guess!0
-
my scale is inconsistent in a matter of minutes. Just poor design. You want to watch overall patterns anyways.
whatever is happening (you lost me in the bit about your waist measurements and pants size)...the key to success is to never give up.

it can defintely take a higher loss to really see it.
As was as water retention U will have lost the fat inside U, around your organs.
you're doing great0 -
Stop eating fast food. Do you know what is in that crap? Watch "Fast Food Nation!" and eat something that is actually food. Good luck!0
-
I should just give up on being thin, and just lift a lot of weights, and become that guy who huge arms and chest and shoulders.
I vote for this, yes, please.0
