How do you/will you know you are at your "healthy" weight?

I'm ten pounds away from my "healthy weight range". That range is a span of thirty pounds! What signals do you understand to mean that you are done losing weight?

This is a good question and I suspect that there is no single right answer. My aim is to weigh the same as I did when I graduated from High School. I was in good shape (varsity swimmer) with six-pack abs, but who knows what it will be like when I get there now?

I don't know if there's really an answer to this. You're around my age. No matter how hard I work, I can't see ever being done. In my 20's, yes, I could get to a certain stage and say, "I'm done", and stay there for a while.

Now, if I even stare at cheesecake, I gain 5 lbs. It's really a constant battle of good and evil. There is no, nor for me, will there ever be, a done. It just goes on and on and on. If I eventually hit my goal, it will be very, very hard work to stay there. Maintenance of my goal weight is probably more difficult than just getting there.

I just looked into this today! I'd take BF% into consideration as well. As a woman you don't want to drop too low (my age I believe was 21%BF min before too little).

I'd say stop losing when you're comfortable with your weight. I wanted to stop 3 lbs. ago and am having a hard time maintaining and have continued to lose. It's a balancing act for me!

Also, do you want to tone, build muscle? Then you will weigh more but look leaner, IMO.

There's a range because some people are built more slightly and some just have a heftier build. I picked the middle of the healthy weight range as a general target. I don't think there's any specific sign that's going to tell you "this is your best weight." It's just going to take you some time to figure it out. If you have to really fight to get down to a certain weight, a little heavier might be better for you, but that's going to be something you'll have to figure out.

Very good question and a question I've asked myself over and over again. I'm 10 pounds away from "goal" weight that I set in my mind when I started this journey. I'm now at the very top of the weight chart for my height. No matter what I do I can't drop the last few pounds. Been 6 1/2 months and I am stuck right here. Sometimes I can budge the scale a couple of pounds and without doing anything different the scale moves back up. I hover between the same 3 pounds. I've just continued working out with cardio and weight training and continue toning. I'm 5' 8" and weigh 165 but most people don't believe it...they think I'm about 145. So I'm taking it as a sign I'm close to done and maybe time to move into maintenance.

Great responses! I am considering BMI and BF%, plus toning and building muscle. I guess what made me really think about it, too, is that question you get when people start to notice you losing weight..."So, how much do you want to lose? What do you want to get down to?"

It's a great situation to find yourself headed toward!

When you get close to your goal weight range, I'd actually start looking at body fat % instead of pounds.

I will probably never reach what BMI considers a healthy weight for my height. I'm big-boned, wide-shouldered, and wide-hipped. I haven't been in the 120s-130s since middle school. I figure I'll know when I get there. There are a few things that I'd like to reach (like wearing a medium sized shirt, being around a 10-12 size pant), but really, I think I'll just know when I reach it. I have a goal of 145 lbs right now because that's how big I was early in high school and I was considered 'good looking' by others at the time. We'll see if 145 is where I feel comfortable in my skin.

my "goal" is 5lbs heavier than my actual "healthy" range. i don't know to be honest. i figure i'll know when my doctor stops telling me "you know, you should really lose some weight". LOL AND i'd really like to know what my body fat percentage is also. i think that would be a great indicator.

I had a clothing size in mind, as well as a weight goal. it turns out I've gotten very fit in last 6 mths or so, but not lost any significant amount of weight. Within a range of 5lbs, I've gone from a size 10 to a 6. My goal was size 8, 145lbs. I'm a size 6 and 150lbs-ish. I'm just maintaining at this point, and doubt I'll lose anymore weight, but my goals now are more about muscle gain and better running ability (speed and endurance)

There's a pic of me I have from last year this time. it''s only about 15lbs ago, but it looks like twice that! so funny!

I agree with this. I adjusted my goal a few times as I got closer. Once you get down close to your "healthy BMI range" I would start looking more at composition instead of the scale.

I guess I will know when I am of healthy BMI and BF%.
However, how will I know when I have achieved my body.and fitness goal is another question.
I am approximately half way to goal and though my pants tell me I have lost because they are falling off me, I don't see that reflected in the mirror. I think it will take my mind awhile to catch up.

    But basically I would like:
    Muscle definition and lower BF%
    Gain some strength/endurance
Be happy with how I look

It depends on your frame size (small, medium or large build). So for example, I'm 5'3" and the top end of my healthy weight range is 144. I look bad at 144 because I have a small frame

    I am sooooooooooooooooooo close!

My first goal was 155 ( from my high weight of 182) then I decided on 145 - did I mention I am 5'7" and 46 years old?

According to my scale I am flirting with my goal! and my body fat reads at 29 % which is in the healthy range and my BMI is happily right on target too! I still have room to improve and two pregnancies have left me with a combo pf some loose skin and a small pooch I am still trying to rid my self of!

I am trying to kick my scale addiction and my new goal is to look as good OUT of my clothes as in them - i know that sounds bad, but after 10 + years of not even looking good ( to me) in my clothes I am SOOOOO enjoying knowing that I look...erm, ahhh, uh good? hot? Geez I sound like a ego freak!!

I hit my healthy range last week but I figure I need to drop another 15-20 so that I give myself a little wiggle room for vacations and holidays. Plus I really want to be more tone than I am now so I know that will mean more weight coming off.

Not at all!!! I know what you mean, my clothes are starting to fit like I've always wanted them to...and the mirror is once again, my friend. :)
