Calories Burnt-Major Difference?

Hey all-
I worked out on the elliptial machine yesterday for 30 minutes. The machine said I burnt 316 calories. When I logged the info into MFP it had me at 487 calories burnt.

So...should I just go with the MFP # and not worry about it? I'd like to be as accurate as I can, I understand that the most accurate # would be if I wore a Heart Rate Monitor but that's not an option right now.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I would probably add the 2 numbers and divide by 2
    -or-
    go with the lower number.

if the machine has you enter age and weight it is probably the more accurate estimate

without a HRM, id go with the lower number..
when i did the elliptical this morning, the machine said ~460, and mfp said 650.
    my HRM said 401

Without a HRM, it's safer to go with the lower number.

I had to tweak DOWN most of the MFP calorie burn rates.
    Both numbers sound high.
More like 275 ....you need to find your own zone and go with those numbers.
    How will you know?
Simple. Are you losing weight? Everything else might seem right, but at day's end, we either see results or we do not.
That is how I found my zone.
    Good Luck:flowerforyou:

The only truly accurate way is a HRM, although your machine sounds way closer than MFP.
I used to log it as what my machine said and then x .8 before I had a heart rate monitor. It was surprisingly close.

I totally would invest in a HRM. I use the elliptical at my dads and my calories are always at least 100 calories less than what the elliptical says I burned.
