My Polar FT7 has gone wonky!

I have had it for roughly 6 months, use it maybe twice a week.
The last two days it keeps saying that it can't read my heart rate and to check the device. Does this mean that the battery in the little black device needs replaced, that the strap is screwed up, or that it's just broken? I know the issue isn't likely the watch because it is working fine so i am thinking its the little black piece you attach to the strap.
Help?

Have you washed the strap? Might be worth a try.
Remember you need to disconnect the "black device" from the strap after you finish using it. If not it will probably be a battery.0 -
I agree with larkiedeek, try washing the strap, I wash mine every week. If that fails I would try a new battery in the transmitter (aka the black device!!)

**NOTE TO SELF**
Thanks for that reminder as I never do. :flowerforyou:0 -
If you have been detaching then at 6 months of 2 sessions a week I reckon it's unlikely to be the battery. If you have been detaching & a simple wash doesn't seem to help then try this: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/322302-is-your-polar-wearlink-strap-giving-you-grief?hl=wearlink+grief#posts-5535052
Basically chuck the strap (without transmitter) in a plastic bottle of super hot water & give it the milkshake treatment.
Also check the contacts on the transmitter & strap for any sign of corrosion - try a little silicon spray if there are signs of white/corrosive residue.0 -
About a week ago i did accidentally leave it connected for about 15 hours....forgot about that.
I will try the washing ym strap, and if that fails i'll try a new battery.
Can anyone tell me what kind it takes and if you can get one at a regular store like target or rite aid?0 -
