I gave up sugar and artificial sweeteners a few weeks ago. Withdrawal was pretty bad as I gave up caffeine also at the same time. The only sugar I allow myself is natural (in fruits and veggies). If I buy something prepackaged it has to be in 5g of sugar or less range.

Believe me, I know firsthand how hard it is to give up sugar. Prior to my decision I would eat a Dunkin Donuts cinnamon raisin bagel with butter and a frosted donut for a midmorning snack. (700+ calories right there!) every day!!!!

After withdrawal (about three/four days) I felt amazing. My headaches and afternoon sleepiness were completely gone! Now I don't even care about sugary food. I hope it lasts.

Good luck! Friend me if you'd like - my name is Laurie

wow Laurie that is awesome! Mostly everything I eat has some type of sugar...maybe I should try like you said just natural sugar in fruits/vegetables that is a good idea! Thanks for your story :-)

There is nothing wrong with sweets, as long as you're still staying within your calorie goals. If that's a problem, and one piece of chocolate leads to eating the whole bar, for instance, do not let it enter your home. Keep healthier "sweets" on hand, like fruits. And try logging it before you eat it. Eating with awareness of how many calories you are consuming could be enough to make you put it back down.

Once you kick it you wont crave it anymore :). Try eliminating it and see how you get on.x

This might just be me - and anyone can feel free to argue - but I absolutely refuse to eliminate sweets.

That being said, I'm not a huge sugar junkie...but consider this... Anyone embarking on a weight loss journey needs to understand a very simple concept *diets are not effective for weight loss *. There, I said it. Diets SUCK. What you really need to do is undergo a **lifestyle change**.

That being said, is my reason for not eliminating sweets, because I want habits that I can continue for the rest of my life. So instead of elimination...I do this really cool thing called - moderation. Why moderation? Because it prevents me from binging. Think about you... you fight the urge all day to have a little chocolate...maybe you fight that urge all week...and then come Sunday night, you're sitting with an empty pint of chocolate icing thinking "how the hell did that just happen". So to prevent that binge, if I really have a hankering for something, like chocolate, I have a small square of dark chocolate. Fixes the craving and doesn't ruin my progress.

Okay, so I realize that was a bit of a rant....but I fully believe it to be accurate. Also, consider healthy sweet snack alternatives. Some of my favorites are:

    1) frozen grapes
    2) popcorn (without all the gross movie theater butter)
    3) kale chips (I bake them myself)
    4) 100 calorie packs of cocoa almonds
