how do you track how many miles? do you have an odometer? I just ride, I don't know how many miles =\ but I LOVE IT0

@dotti1121 - Welcome aboard - I keep mentioning this, but one of cheapest/easiest ways to sort out your mileage on the bike if you already have a reasonably recent smartphone (Android or iPhone for example) is to use a GPS application for the phone - just search for "Endomondo" or "Strava" for examples. They're dead easy to use, and you have all the fun of showing your friends a map of where you've just been. I think they have free versions, but even the paid-for app. is way cheaper than a bike computer.
Unfortunately, I'm the only person in the world who STILL doesn't have a smart phone!!!:grumble:0 -
Welcome! I just barely got a smart phone (though it seems a lot stupider than my dumb phone). I have started using the strava app. I love it. I do have a bike computer that I got off of amazon for about $40. It's been installed, but I haven't read the instructions yet. With 4 kids extra moments are few and far between and I usually save them for my workouts.:blushing:0

Yin, you are amazing! Your progress is so inspiring!0

I did my 4 miles tonight. It was so slow. It didn't seem to matter what I did to my gears it felt so hard to push and I just couldn't keep my speed up. Then, when I made the last turn into my neighborhood, just as I was about to give up on my cycling ambitions because it is getting harder not easier, I discovered my front tire was completely flat.:grumble:0

I've done that before! LOL0 -
All of these stories are so inspiring.. I just bought my first bike in years about 1 1/2 months ago. I think this chanllenge is a great idea. I am definately in....CricketKate dont give up... I just keep saying smaller thighs-smaller thighs-smaller thighs LOL
June 17th - 8 miles 12-13mph0 -
I just recently bought a bike and I am going to begin riding tomorrow. Instead of measuring by Miles I am going to aim for a time to get an idea of how far I can go within that time frame (My work schedule is crazy and this will help me adjust accordingly).
Any suggestions for someone who hasnt ridden in probably 12 years?
Be easy on yourself the first week or so... Your butt is going to hurt at first so you might want to bike every other day in the beginning. If you're only biking 20 minutes or less you might be fine but if you're biking 45min to an hour to work you'll feel it at first.
Have fun!!0 -
ive dont over 60 miles so far, i ride back and forth to work its 8.5 miles one way. I ride 4 times a week. Theres a cool website and app called mapmyride, just like MFP but with bicycling0
-
I finally got a new bike and very excited to ride!0
-
Welcome new faces!0
-
Are you doing this challenge in July? Kind of late to join now, but I love cycling and will join if you have it in July!0
-
@BigYin - Well done you! Now, do you have the courage to go to the barbers...? (Only joking).
Seriously, I am about to have an injection in my foot in just over a week but if it is successful, I am hoping to join in with any cycling challenges. I always rode my bike to and from work but had to stop 18 months ago when the pain in my foot got too bad and the weight has piled on. I'm now trying to tackle that and biking is part of the strategy but I have to wait until a few days after the injection on 13th July 2012 before I am allowed to start.
Hope to see you all in August, assuming the bike challenge carries on.0 -
I will definately be carrying on in July and August.0

I think with mileage figures like that, you really aught to sign up to the TdF challenge for July...
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/619261-tour-de-france-challenge-21-days-in-july
There's currently a team with 4 slots vacant, and a 1100km a month man might just make all the difference for them
Sorry about the blatant "THREAD PIMPING" but if at all possible I'd like people to have actually signed up for the clallenge before it starts, and as it starts 30th June 2012 at 11:59am CET (Central European Time) we need some signups PDQ!!0 -
I road 8 more miles since posting last! I haven't kept up with my total for this month, but it's definitely something I'll do for July. Thanks for the encouragement, I WILL CONTINUE!0

Got 8.5 miles in this morning!0

I am at 295.73 so far this month. Going for 450 or at least topping last month's 400 miles.
I made 400.24 for the month. 450 was too much with the need for a post race recovery week during the heat wave.
My long ride was 40 miles. Might not top that in July as the weather is so horribly hot.

Is there a July bicycling challenge thread?0

I just returned from vacation but I am getting back in the groove.......
