Speed Walking versus Runing???

Hey Guys,

What are the pros and cons to both? I have been only able to speed walk on my "runs" lately because my knees are killing me. I am going 4.6 miles and trying to do some jogging. As much as I can. Today it took me about 70 minutes to complete.

Is speed walking going to burn a lot of calories too or do I need to be striving for jogging? thanks ahead of time!

    Hello,

I speed walk almost everyday, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. I am not interested in running at all because at the rate I walk I am able to do more. If I ran I think I would probably pass out. So I'm sticking with the speed walking. Also, when I started walking I was at 132lbs. I am 5.1 feet tall. That was in February, as of today I am 119lbs., so I think this is working for me, and I am sure it'll work for you. I actully enjoy speed walking, it's fun.

I also do step class from a dvd at home at least twice a week. It's helped a lot also. But no matter what type of exercises we like and what works for us, if we do not control our eating habits nothing will work.

STAY STRONG and Good Luck with your lifestyle change.

    Robin

Thanks for the suggestions. Yeah we are really strict on our diet. We were vegan now we are going 90% raw and 10% vegan for the rest of it. So in that sense we are strict plus I eat every 2-3 hours and eat small meals. And on my off days I do Slim in 6 along with a few other workouts. So, now I'm justr trying to decide if running is mroe beneficial than speed walking or vice versa....

    Thanks for the types!

I usually do a combination of both. I try to get an hour of cardio in every morning and what I do in the afternoon will determine what I do in the morning. I am currently doing P90X and if I have to do cardio or something with legs in the afternoon, I'll just stick to power walking in the morning. If I don't have to use my legs, though, I'll do a combo of walking and running. I have a loop I do that's about 4.5 miles and basically I'll run as far as I can then walk for a few minutes to get my heartrate back into my zone then jog again. When I spend an hour just power walking I usually burn about 400 calories but when I throw some running into the mix it's usually between 600 and 800 (I wear a heart rate monitor). I've heard that changing your pace throughout the run is good, if not better than maintaining a staple pace throughout... especially if you want to increase your endurance. You could try doing what you're doing now twice a week or so (mixed jog/walk) and just power walk the rest of the days so your legs have time to recover in between.
