I'm finding it very difficult to exercise, because I smoke. So, I'm trying to quit smoking, slowly, baby steps.

Hi! I'm new and so far just lurking but I felt compelled to respond So, here's my first ever post lol! I quit smoking on April 19th and haven't had a puff since. I was a 2 pack a day gal! I drove a day after quitting and live with a 2 pack a day smoker. I still have alcohol and didn't avoid any of the smoking triggers. I used wintergreen altoids (peppermint made me immediately want to smoke). I researched the symptoms. When I craved a cig I did some deep breaths, popped a mint, remembered that cravings pass in 3-5 minutes, and maybe most importantly I reminded myself that *I* didn't actually want to smoke. The addiction did. And I was stronger than an addiction. Then I redirected myself (like a child with a toy). As the hours and days went by I reminded myself of what a waste of effort it would be to give in at that point. Baby steps leave nicotine in your system and draw out the withdrawals. Cold turkey is the fastest, easiest way I think. You have to really want it more than the addiction wants it. My husband still can't quit. I breezed through though because I was finally really ready. Mind over matter! Google. Read. Decide. Get excited. Then- just do it!0

I have 3 left!! I have to quit because I'm having surgery in August and the surgeon will not operate if I'm smoking, plus its time. I'm starting to feel it in my lungs when I wake up in the morning.0

I just read on another thread that somebody is using July 4th as their quit date- "freedom from the habit" and I am stealing this idea! If anybody would like to join me, send me a friend request and we can motivate each other. I need all the support I can get!0

I am trying to quit...again..and again....quit date is Monday. I have quit in the past few years several times. I was diagnosed with COPD and THAT didn't stop me from picking it up again even after getting pneumonia 3 times in one year. Insane? YES! I can't keep using stress or my husband came home with smokes( he is trying to quit too) as an excuse to give in to the cravings. This is an addiction....a monster....and I will keep trying ! I have been clean and sober for 13 years....I CAN do this one day at a time.
A friend told me " people that love themselves don't put poison in their bodies" At first I wanted to smack her...but I realize that I do love myself and I won't feed the monster anymore.
Trying to lose weight and not smoke is going to be a challenge...but I really like to breathe too!
Good luck and best wishes for not being a slave to the nicotine ( I have read that book, and it did help, so I guess I should read it again) "Easy Way To Stop Smoking"

I quit smoking 4 weeks ago. I wasnt a heavy smoker, maybe 6-10 a day orr a pack if I went out drinking. It took me almost a month of buying a pack, having a few, getting angry at myself, throwing it out... and then buying another pack a few days later lol I have such bad willpower
I really want this time to be my last for quitting. The thought of paying to slowly and painfully kill myself is disgusting. Yet when I walk past the smoke areas at work, or see people in traffic smoking my mind goes nuts and I crave a smoke so much
Even if you start by just reducing the amount you smoke everyday, it is a huge benefit to yourself.
Good luck, you can do it!!0 -
I quit cold turkey today! Will this thread remain active for support? I hope so, I'm going to need it!0

i have been a smoker for 15 years. i quit 24 times. i think the longest i quit was 10 days, then it was back, my dirty bad habit... i have now been smoke free for 9 weeks. i honestly didn't have the urges, the cravings, the bad attitude, maybe because i had done it so many times before. the difference for me, was that i was really just done. i never want another smoke again. i was tired of smoking, tired of smelling, tired of not being able to breathe... so i quit. no quit date, no planning ahead, just finished a pack and decided that had been my last one. saying goodbye never worked for me, chain smoking to make myself sick never worked, i just walked away. and have never felt better.
you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
I smoked for 20 years, spliffs, cigars then cigs.
I read Allan Carr's 'Easy Way' book and it did the trick for me, all of a sudden I could see the reasons I thought I needed to do it were false.
It did not preach, it just laid out the logic, and I respond well to logic.
I've not looked back, I couldn't even tell you exactly when I quit now, it's like another world.
Good luck to anyone struggling, if you don't crave something it's pretty easy to ignore it ...0
