HELP! How do you avoid binges?

When when food is not in front of me or I have to make an effort to get it, it's no problem. But if I'm, say, at a party and the chips and dip and candy and greasy foods are out, I have so much trouble saying no! I've tried some things, such as eating beforehand or chewing gum.

What keeps you from binging when the food is in your face?

Honestly, if I'm going to a party or family dinner, I budget extra calories so I can eat the things I want. Pre-planning my day helps a lot with this.
And I came to the following conclusion when it comes to eating massive quantities of food: There will always be food. I have a kitchen, money, a car.....I can get any food I want any time. I can cook food for myself. I have the internet and can find recipes. I can go back to a restaurant. So, there is no need to eat all the food at once. I can get more whenever I want it.

In the party food situation I often find it is easier not to eat anything than to try to take just a bit. Once I start I can't' stop! Face away from the food, focus on the conversation, and keep your hands full (a glass and a purse should do it!)
