Yes I realize this is a strange place to ask for assistance with this issue, but every other link I've tried hasn't really panned out well so I need person-to-person feedback.
My boyfriend and I believe his dad's house may be uninhabitable, but his dad completely ignores the issue. See, the house is almost 90% covered in what we believe to be; Black Mold. =\
The house is usually very humid and has a funny (bad) smell to it. My boyfriend also mentioned that the basement has a dirt floor instead of concrete which I know breaks some sort of city code.
I'll post some links to pictures we secretly took below. Feedback would be greatly appreciated, because of the danger of black mold, if it appears to be uninhabitable (he'll never clean it up) then our next step would be to contact the city and anonymously.. As crappy as that sounds of us..
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! =]

OMG!!! That is frightening! Is your boyfriend's dad sick often, or what seems like always? At this very moment, I have my oldest daughter and my grandson living with us for this very reason! She was renting an apartment that had mold badly! It was black in color, but I don't know if color alone determines what is "black mold" and what isn't. Anyway, they were both sick so often! Actually, they never really completely recovered from a "cold" or "allergies" or whatever, and they'd be getting sick again. They've been here for a month now, and once they both got better, they haven't been sick since.
Just from personal experience, I don't think you can completely get rid of mold. I know of a few houses that had to be completely razed because nothing could get rid of the mold. Oh, and black mold or not, mold isn't good for anybody!
I know that funky smell you mention. Yikes! The odor permeated all of my daughter's and grandson's clothing, furniture, drapes, etc. Fortunately, a good washing in hot water took care of that (she did get rid of the furniture). Wow, I don't know what to advise as to what steps you should take. I'll be watching for what others have to offer, and for updates from you. Good luck.0 -
Go to Home Depot and get one of those do-it-youself mold test kits. Probably either $9.95 or $19.95, I think you expose it to the air in the home and then send it to a lab for results.
Not all mold is toxic, many cheeses are made with mold.0 -
Perhaps you could call the city and see if it is against some kind of ordinance?
ETA - if he is elderly, that also might help you - there could be something there related to proper living conditions for a vulnerable adult?0 -
I'm not really aware of how sick he gets, but he does take medications for respiratory issues, I'm sure his doctor is unaware of his living conditions.
And as for the city ordinance, yes the mold would be considered unsanitary and dangerous so they would want to clean it up immediately.
The problem with testing it is that his dad see's no problem with the mold, so everything we do has to be in secret. We're encouraging him to move out as we're not comfortable with his current living conditions. We don't think it's safe at all.0 -

He's in his 50's so I don't believe he qualifies as elderly, but he has a medical marijuana card for some medical condition so perhaps that could work in our favor.0 -
5 gallons of gas and a match.0

The issues you have shown in your pictures and the fact he is taking medication for respitory problems lead me to believe you are correct. I have been personally affected by mold exposure and it is something you definately need to do something about. I am not sure what ordinances are out there but he may not realize that is a portion of his medical problem. His doctor may not even know and it would possibly change how he is being treated. It is serious and I applaud you at wanting to help him.0

It's not safe, and if he doesn't see that, you should try to help him. He might not like it, but you're doing it in his best interests.0 -
Get him out the house and strip the whole house back to the brickwork...Then treat it from there...This is a specialist job, not a DIY job...If you do a bodge job it will be back within 6 weeks..
Mold can cause chronic lung infections..0 -

if it isn't black mold, you should hire some cleaning people anyway. yikes!0 -
I hope I'm not being offensive but you say the house is humid and has a funny smell. I see he has a Marjuna card. Are you sure he isn't growing his own supply ?0

If he was growing marijuana in there my friend, the weed would be unsmokeable due to bud rot...0
