Kick start weight loss after a plateau

At the beginning of my dieting the weight was coming off more quickly, and lately I've hit a plateau and barely lost anything. I know this can be normal when dieting, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice or ideas of how to kick start my weight loss again. Any advice and ideas are appreciated!! Thanks! :)

I've been told before that taking a week off from dieting and then going back to it can help with this, but I don't know if this is just a myth. I don't want to take a week off and then gaing back some of the weight I've lost...help!!

Taking a break and moving your calorie intake closer to maintenance for a few weeks before moving it back down can sometimes help to break a plateau. As long as your actual maintenance calories do not differ greatly from your estimated maintenance calories, keeping your calorie intake at or below your estimated maintenance will not cause you to gain fat. Any weight gain (if any) would likely be just water weight.

How long have you been at this plateau?

I noticed you have only lost 8 lbs ? & started August 2011 is this correct? Maybe you have restarted your ticker or not updated it?

I had initially joined back in August 2011 but never really used the website when I first signed up, so really that weight loss is since the last week or so of May, so it has been probably about 6 weeks that I've lost that 8 lbs. I know that isn't really bad, but initially I was losing about 2 lbs a week and now I'm lucky if I lose half a pound. I have two weddings in August, and I'm hoping to lose as much as I can before then so I can fit well into the dresses I bought awhile back!

if you set an initial calorie deficit and stick to it your weight loss rate will fall away over time. You need to recalculate and reset periodically and after 8 lbs is probably a good time.

That's not really a plateau, like you said. If you want faster losses you need to eat less or move more. Also don't expect it to always be a linear 2 lbs/week. A lot of us might average 8 lbs/4 weeks but it's like this "drop 4 in week 1, yoyo for 3 weeks, drop 4 more in week 4". If you think your deficit is good as is, I'd say just be patient and don't weight too much.
