And I'm happier than I have ever been!!!

Because of certain circumstances, abuse and not the best home life, plus bullying I ended up severely and clinically depressed from the age of 9 years old.

I started taking lexapro at the age of 14 and then changed that to paxil after a few years. Neither of these worked and as my doctor and I both believed, helped to make my depression worse. After my worst suicide attempt, in June 2011 where I had ended up taking more than 100 pills, antidepressants mixed with some sleeping tablets, my dr took me off these pills fearing they were making me suicidal.

She suggested to me to exercise, and for every day in the next week I had to report back to her how I felt. After a week of being off antidepressants and exercising I started getting feeling back. I was no longer numb. A couple of weeks later, I finally just fell in love with exercise and started feeling happiness.

I have now never been happier. I have a meaning, I know what I wanna do with my life. And I know that I lived through that for a reason. It has only helped to make me stronger :)

Good job! I stopped taking Celexa about 6 months ago (after 3 years of taking it, 2 suicide attempts, and daily panic attacks) because it made me groggy and my dose had gotten so high that they didn't even make it. I weened off slowly, eventually stopping. Shortly after that, I got a good night's rest. I learned some excellent coping skills, and shortly after that I started my new lifestyle. I'm so glad it happened this way. Whenever I feel a panic attack coming on, I just start furiously cleaning (sweating and all) until the feeling goes away. I think that this is a better coping skill than medicine in the long run. So I'm right there with you!

Fantastic! I wish one of my docs had prescribed exercise instead of meds back in the day...it's the best natural antidepressant!

    I'm so pleased for you!
There are usually much deeper issues when we overeat or stop taking care of ourselves, so I think it's important when someone shares their experience.
    Thanks and keep it up!

WOW!!! Such an inspiring story b/c there are so many of us now who are on anti-depressants and would love to be off of them for good!!! You give me hope I know that!! I have also heard that exercise helps with the 'happy' levels in our brain - So glad that you found that to be true!!!

I was extremely depressed and considering anti-depressants before I started exercising again too. After less than a month, I'm feeling better than I have in years, mentally and physically. No turning back now. :)

Exercise boosts serotonin levels. I was on meds for years and I'm finally free of them. I got tired of the weight gain and sluggish feeling. Working out is my new drug. I'm so happy for you.
