10 minute workouts

Can you really get a good workout in 10 minutes? I don't always have a lot of time to fit in a workout, so to me 10 minutes sounds good. I just recently signed up for netflix and they have some 10 minute workouts I thought about trying. I feel any workout is better then none, but 10 minutes doesn't seem long enough to get in a good workout.

  • I can't see how something like that could do much good, except maybe with certain areas for sculpting your muscles. However, if you did the ten minute DVD three or four times, that would do good. :-)

It can work for you as long as you do a couple a day or combine it with some cardio like walking or swimming.
  • My 2009 new years resolution was to stop and do as many pushups and sit ups and I could for 1 minute each, three times a day. I cannot tell you how the combined six minutes a day has made me stronger and more fit. I've always worked out (strength and cardio, 3 times a week), but this just really gave me and extra push. Within the first month I started to see results in my strength. Now I've had to increase to 2 minutes each, 3 times a day....I can Easily do 50 man-style pushups! My arms are nicely toned, but still girly. Although I still have some belly fat (4 kids), my waist has lost another inch. It takes no hardly any extra time--just two minutes when you get up, sometime during the day, and after dinner.

Way to go! That's amazing! Congrats.

If these are the 10 Minute Solutions workouts, then they have a total of five 10 minute workouts on the DVD. I have one that I really like, which is the Knockout Body. I usually play all five workouts together to make a 50 min. workout. But in reality, I don't know how one could really get major calories burnt in just 10 min. But if you are just starting out with exercise doing 10 min. of some exercise is better than nothing.

Yes, I have the 10 Minute Solutions Pilates DVDs and I LOVE them. If I'm running low on time, I will do just one of them.... but ideally, you'd do two or three workouts a day (so really, 20-30 minutes).

I also have Tony Horton's 10 Minute Trainer DVDs, which are AWESOME. But they do say people should be doing 2-3 workouts a day with that program as well.

If you only have time for 10 minutes, though, I think it's better than nothing...

You'll burn x amount of calories in 10 minutes- in 30 minutes, you'll burn 3 times that. If you do 3 ten minute workouts, then you're burning the same amount of calories as one 30 minute workout. It's cumulative - in theory. I always FEEL like I burn more calories the further I get into my workout.

There are free 10 minute workouts (and other workouts) at www.sparkpeople.com and www.exercisetv.tv

In my opinion 10 minutes is 10 times better than no minutes. If you can do 10 minutes when you get up in the morning, and 10 minutes when you get home from work, that is 20 minutes. Never thought it would be a math lesson, did ya? LOL. Anyway, the point is that every minute you spend working out that you would have otherwise NOT worked out, is a step in the right direction. If you start to really enjoy it you might add an extra 5. Or, on some days that you aren't as busy or have a couple of extra minutes here or there, do some pushups or crunches or lunges. Small bursts of physical exertion throughout the day that increase your heartrate and build muscle helps to increase your metabolism all day long. It all adds up. Baby steps. YOU CAN DO IT!

I read an article where someone made it a goal to do 10 situps (or something like that) a day. Some days she would do the 10 situps, other days it stretched out into doing more things (pushups, what have you) so that it was a total of 30 minutes, maybe 60 minutes. Sometimes the hurdle is just the starting. You may find that you start the 10 minute workout and suddenly you are adding on and you've been working out for 20, 30, or more. I'd say to go for it.
