People with serious chronic pain issues-how do you do it?

How do you make yourself move when everything hurts so much? How do you get over the fear that one tiny wrong move could put you down for days? I am still recovering 2 weeks later, from popping my knee weird just walking down the hallway. I have serious, chronic issues that will not go away, and according to multiple doctors, cannot be made better without major surgery that is unlikely to help. I want to get healthier, for sure. I really do. I am just really at a loss as to how to do it.

I swear, I am not trying to garner sympathy or whine here. I really, truly am looking for answers, from "BTDT and here is how I coped" to "here are sites with modified exercises" to "here is the mental stuff I did to succeed".

Thanks in advance for your input.

Oh, btw, pls don't exclusively suggest swimming. This is not a good option for me.

Have you tried stretching? Seriously, have you ever truly and honestly stretched consistently? If not, you'd be amazed at what mobilizing tissues and breaking up tension can do for you. Self myofascial release and other forms of stretching are very beneficial.

low carb to lose the weight, then it might be easier to exercise.

I do a lot of substituting. I can't do high impact so I don't. I find an alternative and keep moving even though I'm not doing it "right".

If something hurts I have to quit using it. I used to use Turbo Jam and loved it but it hurt my back/neck (old injury) and it wasn't worth it.

As I've lost weight, it's been a bit better though but I'm still always cautious.
