Jaw Problems (TMJ) UK

Hello Everyone

Currently having problems with my jaw that have dramatically worsened recently when on holiday in the past few weeks. It goes through stages where I cannot open my mouth very much at all, or opening with no restrictions but clicking loudly in my ear just to open my mouth. It has been jarring and not opening very wide for certain things like brushing my teeth for a few more months without pain.

A few years ago I was eating an apple and my jaw bone felt like it came dramatically out of place (I would not say as far as fully dislocated). I pushed it back in with my hand and over the few days that followed it became incredibly painful and clicked with chewy food. I went to my GP and it took 10 weeks for me to see the maxillofacial department. I was advised of physio to do, warm compresses, avoiding chewy food and trying to rest it as well as possible. I was an outpatient for 18 months and the clicking and pain had subsided a bit (but never gone) and I was discharged as an outpatient.

Now I have no idea what has brought it on, it is concentrated on the left side and came on when on holiday. At least 3 meals on holiday for 2 weeks I did not dare eat due to chewy bread and restricted alternative choices. I called the hospital department yesterday but they said I need referring again as it has been now over a year since I last attended. But the pain, clicking and locking in place are a lot worse than last time, and I keep waking myself up by rolling on it in the night and then cannot get back to sleep so I’m a bit of a zombie at work since going back.

It is lucky that I already had a dentist appointment this morning to check on my wisdom teeth – a week prior to going away I had an infection in the flap of gum that formed above my wisdom tooth. He said that they are fine in themselves but the infection was probably not helped in terms of keeping the area clean with the jaw restriction. He is referring me back again to the maxillofacial department. I told him that I am concerned with the 10 week delay in being seen as I am struggling to eat even non chewy food as my jaw is not letting me open very wide at all but he is not making any offers to put through as important or anything. So I have come out quite deflated to say the least!

Now considering what private options might be but the dentist thinks I have a slipped disc. He was confused as to why the last time I attended the hospital they did not do any x-rays/scans though just prodded around at it and asked questions.

I am convinced I have something that goes back further than the apple incident, I was able to click my joint in a double jointed type fashion when I was little. Also this sounds funny but I sometimes feel my subconscious may have been aware of an underlying issue by the sheer amount of dreams I had prior to the apple incident for many years about specific injuries to my jaw, like being punched in the face and it quite graphically being seriously ripped/broken. Never even been able to grind my teeth, I find the thought horrible in some way, and after asking around definitely not in my sleep either.

Not quite sure what I’m asking, partly just getting a moan off my chest to see if others have similar, part to see if anyone has any suggestions…

Hi im a dental nurse, a slipped disc as in your back???
  • I have Tmj, had since I can remember. I've seen many people from ortho to chiro for it. Everyone has a different opinion. The only thing that has helped the headaches and jaw pain that comes with is a splint that holds the jaw on the correct position and trains the muscles to not extend farther than that. It was made by a specialist and had to be adjusted every week and worn 23 hours a day for 3 months. Then just while sleeping. I don't get headaches anymore that are jaw related and don't click nearly as much. I'm in Canada and there was only one guy in my city (capital of our province so big) that made these so it may take some looking around.

Hi yes I hadn't heard of it for anything other than the back but he said it seemed like the disc of cartilage had come out of place and that it was something more related to that than specifically muscular as I had not been having headaches with it and do not regularly grind/clench my jaw.

I'll carry on looking into what people can do!

I've also had TMJ for a number of years, so I can relate. You might want to look into getting a night splint as suggested by Melindaleigh1. Getting it done by a specialist will cost $$$ but it should be done correctly, mine lasted quite a few years. Or you could choose to get boil and shape ones in the pharmacy or online (Den-Tek etc.) - although cheaper, these only last a few months. Part of the problem could also be stress-related, so be mindful of that too. Physio is also helpful. Hopefully you will find relief very soon.

    Mrs T, that's quite a worry.

I had a similar thing but not as severe when i was about 17, my jaw would click a lot and sometimes not open fully, expecially when it was tired (like after a dentist visit). I ended up being referred for phsyio and the nurse did ultrasound on it a few times, which weirdly helped. I also had a mouthguard because unlike you i can and do grind my teeth- which exascerbates the problem.

When I had the same wisdom teeth problem (all 4 pointing forwards and 1 infected) I had to have them out by general surgery because the dentist knew I couldn't hold my jaw open that long. I was about 24 then.

Things have been better since, but I do still get stiffness if my jaw is overworked- like when I scuba dive in cold water and I grip the regulator with my teeth for too long. And it always clicks. My Dad's the same, and my brother was born with a piece of jaw missing- had to have a transplant from his rib, so I imagine there are some genetics involved here!

Hope you get some relief, keep hassling them.

Edit to add I just googled TMJ, didn't know there was a name for it!

I'm 22 years old and have the same symptoms. They are caused by 1)having a relatively small mouth and jaw, 2) grinding my teeth at night and 3) clenching my teeth all day.

Not much to be done about the clicking, and as far as opening your mouth widely unless you unhinge your jaw, which will be painful, you may just have to accept that there's nothing else you can do. I hate having dental work for that reason: holding my mouth open wide enough means holding my jaw unhinged to the point that when I go to close my mouth when they're done, sometimes I literally CAN'T without help getting my jaw back into place.

Look at getting a nightguard and relaxing your jaw during the day.

Yeah TMJ sucks. Unlike the posters so far I have no trouble opening my jaw, I just can't close it without loads of pain. Its settled a bit in recent months and with careful re-location I can get my teeth to line up for a couple of hours which at least allows me to chew food but the chronic ear aches and tension headaches drive me nuts.

I see some more sufferers thanks for sharing!

I can't say that I do clench/tense it in any way whatsoever...... so not sure if something in my mouth will really help.

My little brother also had a double jointed jaw with me when I was younger but he has not had the same other problems - yet! But I still think some genetic predisposition......
