Hi everyone. I have PCOS have had it since I was a kid. I finally had my tubes tied three years ago and a uterine ablation done because I was bleeding every day. I am 27 years old. I was on metformin for a bit but insurance stopped covering it so I'm nothing now for my PCOS. I do not have sugar problems in fact my sugar usually runs around 82. My problems besides the weight is the hair growth and the acne. Holy snikies some days I feel like a pimply wookie.
If you would like to add me, feel free to!0 -
fellow PCOSer here. Had symptoms my whole life but was dx via ultrasound about 7yrs ago. I went from 210 to 140 by going veggie and working out 6 days a week. Also didn't eat much bread at all. Then I got pregnate with my son and am at 170. For the last year I kept trying to lose weight to no avail. Last October I was finally getting it off with very few calories and vigrous work outs but started having major blood sugar attacks. Didn't know what they were back then, thought something serious like stroke was going on. So I quit watching what I ate and gained back the 10 lbs I had lost but the attacks stopped. Started to lose weight again and the attacks started again along with planters fascitous (no idea how to spell it, problem with feet). Laid off the exercising and the weight was coming back so fast even with working out 3x a week for an hour (less then I had been) so I went to the dr and she put me on Met. Also I had always been on low dose bc but she had me on reg ortho, so we changed that to ortho lo, will start the new bc in about a week. I can say though that in the last week on met I have fewer sugar cravings and am down 1.5 lbs!! Hopefully this continues as we are wanting to start ttc in Sept. I find that I want to snack but nothing sounds good so I just don't. Anywho, anyone want to add me they can I would love the support. I am so hoping I will finally start getting results without the blood sugar problems. Any advise is welcome too!!0

Hello ladies! I was diagnosed about 3 years ago, and hubby and i are on fertility treatments. Weve been trying to conceive for 4 years and were excited to be moving in the right direction.
My doctor did a glucose test w/ insulin levels and said i didn't need metformin at all, but put me on prednisone for part of the month because us soulcysters tend to have higher dHEA-S levels.
I'm also trying to lose weight in the process!
Please add me and we can motivate eachother!0 -
Nice to meet you all. good luck with your weight loss!0

Hello,
I am 42 and polycystic too.
I never had regular period nd went through a lot to eventually get pregnant 5 years ago. Unfortunately, I gained 30kgs during pregnancy and do not seem able to lose it!
I am not taking meds. I m going to the gym 4 times a week nd although, my shape have changed (I now have a waist, sort of), I still have not lost any weight... I have been on mfp since Jan 2012.
My doctor says I should change my exercise routine to long sweating sessions instead of aerobics and drop my calorie intake to 1000 a day. He said to go on weight watchers to lower the carbs intake.
Unfortunately, just the thought of dieting makes crave the carbs....
I really want to get fit to play with my son .and look and feel better. I always look bloated, like I have been inflated...
Please feel free to add me for extra support. I m glad to know I am not the only one struggling with losing weight due to pcos...0 -
I just had my first appointment with an RE last week and she thinks I have PCOS (pretty sure, waiting on lab results to confirm the diagnosis but I have all the others signs and symptoms). My cycles have been crazy irregular for about 2 years since going off BC and no luck getting preggers in over 18 months but we finally did this past May but lost the baby about 2 weeks later. Anyway finding this out has been bittersweet. No one wants to be diagnosed with this but it is nice to finally know I'm not crazy and all the random symptoms I've been having are all related. Feel free (any of you ladies) to add me as a friend, it would be nice to have some friends going through the same issues and struggles with weight loss so we can help and support each other.
My RE said that if the labs confirm the PCOS then I will probably be put on metformin and probably also clomid (we are still ttc). For those who struggled with met did they start you out on a lower dose and work up to the full dose? My RE said that helps because it does make some people sick. I'm hoping the meds help me but I am also more dedicated now to working hard to lose this weight because it not only should help us conceive again but also help to avoid other health problems later in life.0 -
I have pcos and want to have my own child one day. We have been ttc for 4 years now and its so stressful :-( I am losing the weight to become healthier and happier!!!! You ladies are a great inspiration to me :-)0

Hi ladies!
Fairly new around here. Had symptoms of PCOS all through puberty but was only diagnosed five years ago, at 19. Not currently on any medication to treat it. Metformin had no effect, and I cannot take hormonal BC. I do have a question for all you ladies: I know it is significantly harder for women with PCOS to lose weight than it is for women without PCOS to lose weight. I read this article not so long ago that may offer some insight into why:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18678372
For those who just want the quick and dirty facts, here are the results of the study:
PATIENT(S): The study included 91 Greek women with PCOS and biochemical hyperandrogenemia, with mean age 24.03 +/- 0.55 years and mean body mass index (BMI) 26.67 +/- 0.69 kg/m(2), and 48 matched regularly menstruating women, with mean age 26.33 +/- 0.93 years and mean BMI 23.35 +/- 0.85 kg/m(2), as control subjects.
RESULT(S): Adjusted BMR was 1,868 +/- 41 kcal/day in the control group, 1,445.57 +/- 76 in all PCOS women, 1,590 +/- 130 in PCOS women without IR and 1,116 +/- 106 in PCOS women with IR. Adjusted BMR showed a statistically significant difference between women with PCOS and control subjects, with lowest values in the group of PCOS women with IR, even after adjusting all groups for age and BMI.
What this shows is that women with PCOS (both with and without insulin resistance) have a significantly lower BMR than women without PCOS. I was just wondering if any of you ladies had heard something similar and had taken this into account. Seeing this it makes sense that it is more difficult for us to lose weight, and in order for us to see the same weight loss as someone without PCOS, we would have to eat far fewer calories.
I'm sorry for the novel - I just thought it might be interesting to some of you.0 -

Hi Everyone,
I am 34 and got diangnosed with pcos about 7 yrs ago after giving birth to my daughter although I am sure I have always had this condition as I have had a full beard since 14, didnt get a period until I was in my early 2o's, have thinning hair, and carry most of my weight in my abdomen. Thank goodness I was able to concieve my child without any issue at all. I attribute this to loosing 100 lbs in the few years prior (I gained that all back during my pregnancy).
I was on met for a few years with little effect one way or the other so I just stopped taking it. I feel like I have been on a constant diet and excercise routine with no result. Recently at a routine doctors appt. I weighed in at 301lbs. This was the most I ever weighed and being over 300lbs was devastating to me. I joined my gym that same day and began working out 6 days a week and watching what I ate. I lost 16lbs in 3 months. I constantly research exercise and diet methods that might work for me and I came accross intermittent fasting. The research suggests that this method helps folks with insulin resistance. I am just wrapping up my first week with this method and have lost and additional 5lbs  !!!! I have SSSOOO much HOPE with this method because it helps me stick to a restricted calorie diet (something I have never been able to do in the past as it caused me much anxiety to spread out minimal calories over many small meals), it helps me feel in control of my circumstances, and I am feeling so much increased energy as if I am 20 yrs old again! With intermittent fasting I am able to track my calories with out anxiety and finally take advantage on MFP. I am finding so much inpiration here and welcome anyone to add me for support!
Some tips that help me personally with my pcos include:
Low glycemic load/index diet
weightlifting
sweat inducing cardio
Natural metablolism increasing and liver function foods like lemon, cinn, cayenne pepper, dandelion
Accupressure (esp the liver and kidney meridians)
and most importantly self adoration, care, love, respect, acceptance and compassion :flowerforyou:0 -

Hi Ladies. I have been diagnosed with PCOS for about 7 years now. They had me on metformin and then when I got pregnant in 2006 they took me off. I have just recently been put back on 750 mg. I also have hypothrodism and take synthroid for that. I'm looking for support and any tips you ladies have had to keep your weight going down My doctor told me to try a low carb diet, before that I was just tracking calories. I need some help getting started0

Well i keep hearing that counting calories is what is most important because what you lose in carb calories you gain in fat calories. I have tested this theory. I went to the grocery store and picked up several of the same items, one listed low carb. Well the calorie count was still the same or within 20 calories of each other.
So I dont choose items that boast to be lower carb.....I try to choose items that are naturally lower carbs. Plus working out. I am foregoing metformin.
I love making new friends on here because I feel like I learn a lot from them and get new ideas on food ideas and workout ideas.
Please feel free to friend me! :0)0 -
Just joined MFP. I have had PCOS since my early 20s. I only was diagnosed because I gained 15 pounds in one month and went to see my OB/GYN in a panic about it. I am not pre diabetic but my doctor wanted me to try metformin jut to see if it would work. The side effects scare me silly so I stay on birth control alone which helps with the hair issues and the acne and keeps me regular but does NOTHING for my weight. They say go easy on the carbs but all that leads me to do is avoid them for a week or so and then eat an entire bag of chips and a bag of cookies in one sitting. So, on the advice of my amazing sister, I am giving this a go and while I am sad to see others have to deal with the disease like me, it is nice to see that there are methods to cope with this that do not involve meds and to read the success stories.0

Hi! Another PCOer here! I was diagnosed when I was 12 but with hard work, lost a lot of my weight when I went off the college. Recently, I have gained all that and more back. I have to lose atleast 50 lbs and it has been really the worst year. Nice to meet you all! Keep up the good work and we can overcome this!0

I am a PCOS girl too....I would like to know if any one has had success with laser treatments.0

I've (unfortunately) had PCOS since the summer before I turned 16... was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism at the same time, as well. I was put on Levothyroxin 50mg for Thyroid, and for PCOS I took Spironolactone (Aldactone) 25mg, Metmorfin 1000mg/day, and Yasmin BCP. After about 4 years, I talked to my doctor and told her how Metformin and Spironolactone tend to make me feel nauseous all the time, and she said to just not take them--that they didn't really seem to play a role on my blood sugar according to my recent bloodwork....
...I've ballooned ridiculously since then. Even when I watched what I eat, I don't lose weight as I should. Right now, I'm at my heaviest, and finally realized that my body probably needs some sort of Metformin-like supplement for it to start functioning right again... I want to try Chromium Polynicotinate, since I heard it works wonders on women with PCOS/Insulin-Resistance. They say Cinnamon works too, but I'm allergic... any advice on how effective the Chromium Polynicotinate is???0 -
My wife has PCOS and she is really emotional about her struggles with it and weight loss. If any of you want you could add her as a friend. She needs support from you ladies that know about her struggles. (stormygirl_82)0
