7 oz. Turkey (½ white & ½ dark)
1 C Mashed potatoes
½ C Gravy
1 C Turkey stuffing
¾ C Green bean casserole
1 Dinner roll
1 T Butter
2 Deviled eggs
¾ C Candied yams
¼ C Cranberry sauce
Relish plate
Carrots
Celery
Cauliflower
Olives
Pickles
Salad dressing
1 sl. Pumpkin pie (1/8 of 9" pie)
1 T Whipped topping

CALORIES IN MEAL = 2157

EXERCISE EQUIVALENT (175 lb person) = 3 hr stair step, 3hr 45 min elliptical, 3 hr 24 min bicycling (12-14 mph), 2 hr 45 min running (10 min/mile), OR 5 hr 25 min walking (15 min/mile)

You can have a nice Thanksgiving meal without being too "calorie expensive" by practicing sensible portion control, limit snacking all day, and being mindful of your satiety. Have a great Thanksgiving!!

1 cup of potatos and 1/2 cup of gravy seems excessive to me, no one needs that much food in one meal.

I thought the 1 cup of stuffing was a bit much too. I love stuffing...but a cup full?

I couldn't even think of eating those types of portions-the 1 cup of potatoes and 1 cup of stuffing would do me in for sure and I probably wouldn't eat 7 oz of turkey. I also noticed in your quote that there are not very many vegetables except for your relish plate that you didn't itemize. I would size-down that portion of candied yams and eat more brussel sprouts without the butter, extra carrots and extra cauliflower. Great on your exercise! Enjoy your meal! Happy Thanksgiving.

Before anyone reads this and reacts badly... this is my own personal opinion. I respect the fact that everyone approaches holidays differently, and what works for me may not work for others. Everyone has to have their own "battle plan" (or lack of a plan) on days like this.

That said, I find the mentality that "Oh, it's just Thanksgiving" to be problematic... there are so many "special" days a year that one could apply this to. I ended up overweight because I didn't pay attention to what I ate. The more I allow myself to make special allowances for this day or that day, the more I'm weakening my new habit of making healthy choices.

I can understand why some people want a day where they don't worry and just indulge themselves in food, but Thanksgiving is really about family and friends and what you are thankful for... for that reason I think it should be no different, food-wise, than any other day.

I do expect myself to go somewhat over in calories, due to the type of food being served today - but that doesn't mean I'm giving myself a free ticket to eat all I want. I will have a good time and enjoy myself, but I will be eating reasonable portions and WILL NOT eat until I feel stuffed, because that is so unhealthy!! I will be tracking my food. I will not use Thanksgiving as an excuse to make more bad choices...

Ditto, I had 2 cups of potatoes with butter for dinner last night.
Sometimes when I pig out I end up losing weight. Go figure.

This isn't what i am eating this is something I found online.

I already had my thanksgiving 2 weeks ago before my husband deployed. And I ate a bunch (no desert) and gained weight and now 2 weeks later after back tracking I am trying to burn it off.

As for today the official holiday i am eating light- I have to work really hard to lose the weight that I have gained then work harder to reach my goal--

    Have a great holiday everyone

The closer that it gets to time to eat, the more stressed out I become. I not only don't want to gain weight, but I realllly don't want to eat so much I feel sick for hours afterward. I feel like it is inevitable that this will happen. And then, I have to do it again tomorrow at my Dad's house :( It is sad that I am yet again more focused on the food than the good company...but now instead of thinking about how good the food will be all the time, I am dreading eating it at all. I'm sure when the time comes I will be fine and mellow out...I'm just stressed in general b/c I have a huge exam on Monday (my profs are stupid), I guess....

It's ONE day...the chances of even being able to absorb ALL the calories from such a large bolus of food are low. Your intestines work well and are made to mix and squish everything, but a good deal more is lost from really large meals in which the chunk of food is so large that it moves too quickly through the intestine to be thoroughly mixed and turned inside out and mixed some more. Plus you need to eat 3500 calories EXTRA--not total--to gain a lb of fat. And you're not going to use all 3500 calories of an excess for fat alone--some of that will go to muscle repair.

So in short...don't worry so much! If you want to eat a lot, eat a lot. If you want to measure, measure. But don't feel guilty and get back to your normal schedule tomorrow (or the day after if you have 2 Turkey days).

Yeah, personally, if I'm really worried about it, I'll put in an hour of elliptical + 40 minute of 30 Day Shredd (last 2 phases) which is about 1300cal burned. +2000 for maintenance. And I figure at that I should pretty much be able to eat whatever the heck I want haha, I've earned it right?

ps. songbyrdsweet, that's kinda cool.. how much do you think the intestines actually absorb then? of say a 3500cal pig out fest?

That really depends on the person...we are all pretty much similar but some of us have fewer or more folds in the intestines or better peristalsis, etc. But you can bet that after a big meal like that you'll have a large b.m., and it won't all just be fiber.
  • You can take the skin off the turkey and do without the butter and gravy and eat half the slice of pumpkin pie.

After reviewing that menu, for me it would be like eating enough for 3 meals. 7 oz turkey is way more than I could consume, and I agree there aren't enough veggies. Pickles you can have, they are just a source of sodium, and I am not a pickle fan, anyway.

It IS just one day, so I am not stressing. Since I am making all the sides for our meal, I have control over what goes in them, so the veggies (green beans, and mashed potatoes w/cauliflower) will be unadorned with salt, and I will add a little garlic to the taters, as it minimizes the flavor of the cauliflower for the "potato purists" at our table. The hostess of our dinner is doing the turkey and making her infamous sweet potatoes with apricots and brandy, which I will probably have one bite of and quit. I have to save some calories for the pumpkin pie AND the chocolate cake we are also having in honor of my dad's 83 rd birthday, which happens to be today.

I have been eating light all week, did a 70 minute walk yesterday, as well as 40 minutes with my doggies at the park. This morning, I took them out for another 45 minutes, but it is raining now and if I do another exercise walk today, it will have to be with an umbrella, as the angels are crying bigtime today!! :ohwell:

I plan to focus on the company rather than the food. Although the spouse of our dinner hostess will be absent due to work, I get to spend yet another holiday with my mom and dad. (Mom will be 94 in January!!) They are both in good health, just moving a little slower these days, but still living independently in a senior apartment complex, exercising regularly, swimming and eating right. My mom is still preparing all their meals.

I know people a lot younger than me who have already lost both their parents, so I am truly blessed. If the scale says I have gained, so be it. There is always the day after that.....and so it goes.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all!:flowerforyou:

I ate way more than I would at a normal meal. I even went back for seconds. That being said I'm not feeling one bit bad about it. I ran 3 miles this morning. Helped set up and take down tables and chairs. Threw the football around for about an hour, went shopping for another.

I'll probably break even for the day. I don't know for sure because I'm not logging anything today.

I've worked really hard to lose the weight I have, and definatly don't want to lose any ground. But in my mind, today is a day to enjoy there being 16% less of myself than there was last year.

I even discovered one of my cousins run triathalons and we talked about different races and events that there were in the local area.

I was fortunate that I was in charge of our meal (and it was just our family).

I spent the past week working at researching recipes. And I was able to reduce the calorie count in the dressing, the mashed potatoes, the gravy, the cranberry sauce and even pumpkin dessert. (I did make real pie for the family, but I made the pumpkin smash found on mfp for myself). I chose not to eat rolls and butter, skipped the cocktail sauce with the shrimp cocktail, & ate fewer shrimp than the family. But...

I was able to eat and enjoy everything I wanted  (not unlimited amounts, but regular servings) and stay under 500 calories.

I will follow with a light supper, but feel so pleased. :smooched: It is very satisfying to know I can face a holiday that used to be an excuse for alot of overindulgence and be victorious. My family enjoyed and appreciated the meal. We discussed the food and they all seemed to have liked the food and not missed all the extra calories.

Now I get to start planning for the next big holiday meal. I'm sure I can whip that meal into shape, too.
:drinker: Cheers everyone and Happy Thanksgiving. -katie
  • LOL! Holy huge dinner batman! Makes my feel full just reading that! But I'm sure I could eat it all if I wanted to.

100% agreed. What I wouldn't give to have a Thanksgiving meal, birthday meal, Christmas meal, or *any* meal- who cares about the food, or the calories or portion size- with my Mom:cry: . We're all on MFP for the same reason, but some of us, based on our experience in life have things that come before calorie counting and portion measuring on certain days of the year. If you want to call it my "excuse" to eat what I want, go ahead. I don't care what it's called, or whether people agree or disagree. None of us have walked in anyone's shoes but our own. We all have to do what's best for us, and I hope everyone especially did that today :flowerforyou:
