I lost 5 lbs in 4 days!

Is this bad?! I've been weighing myself the same time every morning. I also already dropped 3 inches around the waist. I just don't want to be in starvation mode. I've eaten around 1,200 calories a day. One day I even ate 1,400.

I think when you start a new diet you always seem to loose more weight the first week and then it settles to a more normal amount in the next few weeks, maybe this is why.

bear this in mind because at some point you will gain 3-5 lbs for no apparant reason in a couple of days I once gained 7 lb over night

Have you just started? It's normal to lose several pounds in the first week or so. A lot of that will be water weight. 3 inches from your waist in four days is... a lot. Perhaps you were particularly bloated when you took the first measurement.

Possibly, I also lost 2 in the hips and 2 in the thighs.

If you just started yeah it's 100% normal to lose lbs and inches. Usually water and glucose levels dropping!

don't worry about starvation mode, it's not something you need to worry about unless your eating 0 calories. You may pleateau or stall and will have to mix things up to get back to losing but starvation mode is a term thrown around to much and really only exists in 3rd world countries where they don't eat for long periods of time or only eat something very small each day. Think about this...doctors put people on 500 calories a day diet restrictions for months and months on end and they do not go into this starvation mode, they may gain the weight back but they don't go into startvation mode.

Metabolisms and insulin levels can get jacked up though. (AKA what most people are calling starvation mode) Which usually results in the bounceback of weight. Metabolism isn't a set number but it does ebb and flow. It's constantly in flux and eating a low amount does have a tendency to cause the body to persevere and hold on as well as puts an unneeded stress on the body. Honestly though for a day here and there SLC (Super Low Calories) isn't going to have an effect if you do it month and months at a time your body will adjust and you will have to slowly adjust back out of it.
  • Thanks guys! I'm headed to bed bath and beyond in a couple minutes to get a new scale- one that has a rep of being very accurate. I have a crappy couple yrs old scale i'm using so I just want to make sure I actually did lose 5 lbs.

Um Thank you!! I whole heartedly agree with Starvation Mode being thrown around too much. I think people are so paranoid about starvation mode that when they go on a diet they worry because they feel hungry that they are in starvation mode, then eat too much, gain weight and then attribute it to being in "starvation mode". BS. I don't think starving yourself is good for your body of course, but "starvation mode" would take a lot longer than a couple days to kick in, and even then you would keep losing weight until you look emaciated I.e starving models, third world countries.

So compared to those extreme scenarios, cutting your calorie intake by only 500 wouldn't cause a slow metabolism.

*my opinon of course, backed by my own experience with intermittent fasting. No disrespect to others thoughts on the subject.*
