Camping!

Hey,
So, I'm going camping in a couple of weeks, only for two nights, but I was wondering if anyone had some good ideas for meals/snacks to take? Normally we just have loads of comfort food, and I know we'll be having a few beers and naughty treats, but I do want to at least try and stay close to my daily goals!

fruits and veggies (baby carrots, etc) drink only water (other than your couple of beers I guess), if you grill burgers or hot dogs don't eat the bun, you could take chicken and grill it...skip the potato chips-if you must have some kind of "chippy" food eat fritos I think or veggie chips-which even my hubby likes!!!! we found some that are bruschetta flavored.
That's all I have...good luck.0 -
Are you tent camping or do you have a camper?
I always take fruit (cut up in advance if possible), Greek yogurt, lean deli meat, low fat wraps, water, low fat/calorie granola bars, baked chips or rice cakes, and pork and chicken breasts for grilling.
I'm also naughty (and also camping this weekend) but will also workout on Saturday morning so don't feel guilty. I will have a drink or 3 as well.....and will log it all.0 -
I love camping! It's actually super easy to eat healthy with a grill. We do something we call "hobo packets". You just put whatever you like to eat in a foil packet with a little oil, salt and pepper and then cook it over the coals. A couple of my favorites are salmon, new potatoes and green beans. Or, chicken breast, broccoli and squash. I also like tilapia, shrimp and asparagus.0

Hey,
I am tent camping, which means no means of refrigeration! Also, the weather has been incredibly humid here lately so no chance of taking any meat really! I do like your idea of working out on the Saturday morning though, I'm always up early so I can certainly try and fit in a jog (god help me, I am awful at running) before everyone else is up.0 -
Make some healthy trail mix.0

I'm going camping for a couple of nights as well this weekend. Mostly, I plan to eat what I eat when I'm not camping. I'm taking boiled eggs for breakfast, string cheese for snacks, and have my normal meals for lunch and dinner. We'll be making food to take with us and heat up on the Coleman stove. We'll have campfire corn and potatoes one night, and perhaps rice and beans the next night. If you're car camping, just take the food you usually eat. If you have a few treats just make sure to count them. I've also considered bumping my calories up to maintenance for a couple of days to give myself room for a few beers and a few marshmallows.0

Take whatever you want that sounds easy/healthy, as recommended by others (the hobo packets sound yummy). But basically camping implies lots of physical activity, so it's likely it'll even out. Just be sure to keep up your H2o intake and have fun!0

We love camping, and go at least 2x/mo.
A couple things that we do that helps to prevent it from being a huge binge fest, is to assure that we have the healthy snacks all ready to go. Things that we take are:
Cut veggies (carrots, celery, broccoli, etc) and hummus to dip.
Prewashed fruit, ready to eat
Trail mix (we make our own with nuts and dried fruit)
Granola bars for hiking
Yogurts
Cheese and crackers
We love cooking over the campfire, and as a previous poster mentioned, we do a hobo packet one night. It is great to prep that before you leave, and have it ready to toss on the fire the first night there. That way, no involved cooking. Set up, make fire, pull out the hobo packet and cook!
We also like chicken on the campfire.
There are a ton of things you can cook over the fire…. Here is a good link for recipes. You will have to weed out the “not so healthy ones”
If you are tent camping, you may want to think about freezing your meat before you leave, and then tossing it in the cooler (bagged of course). That way, it will stay cold longer. Although 2 nights may not be an issue with thawing.
ETA: I saw that you are tent camping... if you want to take meat, freeze it before hand. A good cooler should be able to keep the stuff cold w/o spoiling. If you have access to a camp store, you can always replace the ice as needed. Also, I bagged everything that went in the cooler (with the exception of drinks - we had a separate cooler for those) to prevent it from leaking, or water getting into it. If you are concerned about the meat, you can precook things at home, then heat them up at the campsite. Fajitas are great for that, as is chili (although it is in the hundreds here.... so chili.... NO WAY!!! ) Also, sandwiches are always a good option!
Have a fantastic time!0 -
grilled protein.
foil packets (you cut up veggies and put olive oil, s&p whatever seasonings you want in it.) so easy, healthy and delish.
i put onions, celery, peppers, broc, zucchini. even brussels sprouts would be good.
i do another packet with potatoes (so the potatoes don't get all soggy)0 -
Thanks! These hobo packets sound awesome! Cannot wait to try them!0

I would suggest taking things that you can grill, like chicken breasts or kabobs. If it is a burger or brat, try without the bun to cut down the carbs. Also veggies like green beans or corn that you can grill are good. Snack on raw veggies if you can. But remember you are on "vacation" so enjoy a smore and some beer too! You deserve it!0

I do the same thing. The next day what ever was not eaten the night before, gets a egg on top and reheated for breakfast.0 -
Yum, those hobo packets are a great idea. Wish I had checked here before I went camping. I would have had a few more alternatives than I had this last week.
I camp in a tent & I did have all my meat frozen in a cooler w/ice before leaving & had a smaller cooler w/less ice & more water for thawing meat & keeping vegies crisp. All items were in their own zip lock bag to keep from cross contaminating and to keep water out. I replaced the ice daily to keep things fresh.
Piesbd: I don't see a link for recipes, I'm betting it's a good one.0 -

I am not much of a camper, but I love to put hobo packs together and throw them on the grill. I would like the link also.0
