Family is making it hard!

I would tell them that doing weight watchers may make the fat come off, but if they are not working out they will not get the cardio and muscle health! Good for you, stick to what you are doing, when you are finished, you will be scultped, they will be "squishy" and soft!0

foiled again! totally thought this was an incest thread....dang.0

It's weird that they make fun of you for exercising, because WW has recently been promoting exercise in a big way. You can earn points back for exercise (the same as eating your workout calories). Every other time I have had to lose weight in my life, I did it with WW...but they changed the system, and I don't really like the new one. So here I am on MFP. But I think it is odd that your family would make fun about exercise when it is a part of the WW program too.
Yeah none of them work out or anything. I used to ask them to go on walks with me and things like that and they'd be like...we have to lose weight before we exercise. Which is ridiculous! Exercise is how you lose the weight!
They are insane- I don't like the new system at all- the old point system was easier- but I also found that tracking points for working out was a nightmare-
Losing weight before you exercise? What is this? This sounds like the philosophy from the 70's- good LORD!
exactly haha! and theyve been in this dieting before exercising phase for about 3 years!0 -

hahaha sorry to disappoint!0 -
Good luck with everything, like many replies you have gotten so far. I too can relate you your story, almost my entire family is overweight they make poor food choices and don't exercise and they are completely happy with being fat.
I on the other hand am trying to make healthy choices and excercise and it is very hard in a home that is not supportive or has no interest.0 -
Most people often confuse just losing weight and losing weight while being healthy. It is one thing to just cut back on calories or follow a program, but without any physical activity you aren't going to be healthy. They may be losing weight but aren't going to be healthy by sitting on their butts all the time!0

Some people dont see the value in exercise, which is sad. Whats good about being thinner if someday you will be frail? Exercise is good for us regardless of weight loss goals. Your body is going to thank you for the perseverance.
Don't forget, exercise can rev your metabolism up, meaning you can eat more0 -

I try to explain this to them all of the time but they just don't listen! My mom thinks it's a work out to walk from the kitchen to her bedroom!0 -
I'm not sure that this will offer much help for the OP (sorry, OP!), but there are some ideas for other unsupportive family situations here : http://nutritiondiva.quickanddirtytips.com/how-to-change-unsupportive-environment.aspx. Good luck.0

Show your mom proof that working out revs up your metabolisms- show her studies and then tell her the reality!0 -

Well, they won't really be able to deny that your method works when it works. I'd say ignore them for now, keep at it, and let the results speak for themselves in a couple of months.
THIS!!!! I'm living with my in-laws and they are such know-it-alls that I get told that to lose I need to fully cut carbs and soda. But I'm not and I'll lose regardless. Plus, I'd personally rather lose with exercising because that helps your whole body stay healthy too.0 -
And most people want to lose weight so they can be more active... you are just adding activity at the beginning...exercise is so beneficial in so many ways...toning muscles..building stamina..helps you sleep better ...healthier heart and lungs...the list goes on and on. ! I say be YOUR own hero!0

Focus on being fit, not losing weight. People who just diet and don't exercise are not losing healthy weight. It's kool to have a scale goal, but you should also have a body fat % goal. If my goal was 180 lbs and I started at 300, just reaching the goal didn't mean I was healthy. I could be 180 lbs and 35% body fat.0

It's sad that people think they have to lose weight before they work out. I was 300lbs and doing kickboxing- as best as I could- to wait is insane. When I had a major surgery a year later and lost 125lbs - my doctor later told me that on the operating table- they were all amazed that after losing 125lbs, I had no hanging skin and was toned. It was because I worked out. plain and simple. Maybe they are jealous that you are working out because they are too lazy?0

I remember one time when I was reading an article about kickboxing in Womens Health or one of those magazines when I was at the doctors office my dad glanced over at the article and said "Why dont you just do some exercises to get rid of the flab on your stomach?"
I think what he was getting at was "Why not just do crunches and sit ups?" I explained to him that because the flab was fat I had to do more than crunches to get rid of it. Sometimes people just don't know or don't get it I guess.0 -
my advice is to prove them wrong!0

Crunches-= still 70's weight loss thinking.0 -

There are many ways to lose weight and what works for one person may not work for another. Just tsnad your ground, and tell them you are going to focus on what works for you. You are right by stopping Weight Watchers, if you aren't enjoying it it's not for you. The diets that work best are the one's that you a. enjoy and b. are sustainable. Remind you family of that and that you won't be very successful doing something you don't enjoy. You will always be more successful doing something you like.0

WW does include activity goals and they do add up to points you can 'eat' if you choose, just like MFP's plan. Your family choosing to not up their activity is their right, but it's not that the program doesn't 'include exercise'.
WW doesn't focus more time on activity than eating because overeating is the majority of the problem. You can walk 10 miles a day and eat back those calories in ten minutes. Easily. No managed weight loss plan focuses on the 'calories out' more than 'in', that I know of.
Why at age 20 does it matter if your family chooses to count points while you choose to go for walks?0 -
The phrase "bite me" comes to mind. But my family wouldn't take that too personally, your might.0
