Ankle question?

So... I sprained my ankle over a month ago during a hiking trip taken the day after I completed my first half marathon (10/18 to be exact).
I still am not able to rotate my ankle all the way, and have to ice it daily to keep down the swelling. On a referral, I set up an appointment with an orthopedic specialist, then in an I'm-to-poor-for-that panic, I cancelled the appointment, on the grounds that it doesn't hurt unless I move it the wrong way -- I am still able to walk, do squats, etc. It only hurts when I invert my foot or run.
Do I try to ignore my cheapskate bone and go to the specialist? Or do I wait it out....??
Oh, and PS -- thank you to the inventor of the recumbent bike for helping me maintain my cardiovascular health!! Love it!
Any notes from people who have gone through similar ordeals would be appreciated -- I intend to run the Chicago Marathon in 2010 and am truly truly itching to get running again!!!

i had the same problem as you ( i think, from how you described it) for months my ankle was swollen and it only hurt when i moved it in one specific direction. when i went to a chiropractor for my back, i mentioned it to him. he yanked at my ankle and within an hour all the swelling had gone down and hadnt returned. it was a miracle as far as i was concerned.

As a nurse, I don't recommend that you ignore a potential fracture. It is probably just sprained as sprains can take up to a year to heal but if you plan on marathons, you should be safe and just have it checked out.0
