You should have started months ago...
http://www.choosemyplate.gov/physical-activity/amount.htmlHow Much Physical Activity is Needed?
Physical activity is important for everyone, but how much you need depends on your age.
ADULTS
(18 to 64 years)
Adults should do at least 2 hours and 30 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a moderate level OR 1 hour and 15 minutes each week of aerobic physical activity at a vigorous level. Being active 5 or more hours each week can provide even more health benefits. Spreading aerobic activity out over at least 3 days a week is best. Also, each activity should be done for at least 10 minutes at a time. Adults should also do strengthening activities, like push-ups, sit-ups and lifting weights, at least 2 days a week.
It isn't just a toning up and dieting thing, it is an all the time thing, to be done regularly throughout your life. It is what healthy people do.0 -
No time like the present (unless you have a time machine... )
When losing weight through calorie restriction alone most people will lose some lean muscle mass along with fat. The best ways to mitigate the loss of of muscle tissue are to ensure that your diet contains an adequate amount of protein and strength training.0 -
You can start strength training at any time when you are trying to get healthy and fit. I started at my highest weight working with a personal trainer, and he has me strength training (I do the cardio part on my own). I think it makes a big difference.0

I appreciate the information but for you to add that's what healthy people do, like I'm not healthy becuz I don't do strength excercises is crazy! You don't know me were not mfp friends so the next time you want comment on someone elses question think about what to say and how to say it! Now since i am a Christian I'm going to leave you alone!0

Yesterday would have been better, but today will do.
I waited too long, and lost a lot of upper-body muscle in my deficit. My body fat percentage (based on testing by one of the trainers here at work) is still OK, but if I had been putting some work in with iron instead of Mr. Elliptical I'd probably have been better off.
Fortunately, I bicycle in hilly terrain a lot, and Mr. Elliptical is usually set to very high resistance, so the two of them have helped me retain some semblance of lower-body muscle. But Mr. Plank and Mr. Squat and I are just now coming to speaking terms, and the conversation on my side is usually grunts of pain. I'm working on it, though.0 -

I'm just pointing out what the gov't is saying. Those are the official gov't guidelines for healthy living (it replaced the food pyramid).
Don't shoot the messenger. Everybody, young or old, fat or skinny, should be strength training 2x a week.0 -

Better late than never. RIght? I was told to keep up with the cardio and walking I've been doing and to check out www.stronglift.com for help on how to lift weights, burn fat and get toned. I believe the guy who owns strong lifts is allowing free downloads of the lifts right now. Check it out and see if it helps you out any.0

Like others have said being in a caloric deficit can result in loss of lean muscle, and strength training will help maintain it (as will eating plenty of protein). That being said the world is not over because you havent been strength training all along but if you start now you will probably see faster results than with cardio alone.0

He never called you unhealthy.
You asked when you should start strength training. He said you should have already started. He gave you evidence why you should have started and pointed out that it is a habit of healthy people.
