Yo Fatman!
When my legs are aching I use the elliptical / cross trainer putting all the effort on my arms but there's lots of machines that don't need any leg effort at all if you like and can get to a gym.
hope this helps0 -
what about the rower? granted there is still a bit of leg movement, but it is not weight bearing?
what about supersets of upper body weights exercises, to get your heart rate up, with little rest in between? you could sit on a bench or fitball and do like overhead press, side lateral raises, biceps/triceps etc, over and over with lighter weights but getting your heart rate up?
i'm sure there must be some fitness instructors or personal trainers on this site who could recommend some modified exercises for gammy knees? Hopefully they see this thread.0 -

Given I have knee problems, my PT got me on the rower, but instead of doing the whole motion with my legs I only did the upper body workout! Absolutely knackered after!
If you want to check out my exercise diary to see what my PT has me doing, feel free. Drop me a line if you want any clarification on movements. happy exercising :bigsmile:0 -
One word: SWIMMING!
Make a way to get in that water - no excuses!0 -
Hi
yes swimming is great when the water is warm.
I hear ya with the sore knees - I had a car accident a number of years ago and whole lower body had crushed bones - i eventually walked again but some mornings i shuffle more than walk - until i invested in vibration technology - look into a vibrating platform - no, nothing pornographic -
vibration platforms will assist with mobility. you can do lunges, stretches, upper body, back and even just sitting on it will help you with a sense on well-being. These machines will only help you with an intial toning but they are better than nothing. I went from barely moving to being able to step up onto a step ladder within a month by using a vibrating plaform. I especially value it during winter - i use it every morning to help 'free' up the body and get moving. I spent a lot of money and time at a physio for movement and accupunture therapy until i go this platform - i haven't been back to physio since.
I now also have a treadmill and can walk at a steady rate - so don't give up - stay active0 -
The elliptical is easy on knees.... Or maybe those rowing machines? cardio is cardio so you can do those machines that use a lot of arm or core strength and get the same results.0

I just thought of another one! Boxing is fantastic cardio and you don't need to get a lot of movement in from the lower body if you can't! Fantastic at getting the heart rate up!0

Thank you all for the advice, I have a swimming pool just up the road from me so I will start to use that and my mate has some weights I can use for upper body workouts.0
