How MFP calculates exercise

Some of the updates on my newsfeed is interesting. Swimming for 1 hour and burning 1000 calories, walking for 45 minutes and burning 500 calories? This seems awfully high to me.
I haven't logged any exercising, but now that I'm working out more often, I was thinking about it, but these calorie counts seem wrong.

I have a calorie counter on my exercise bike and what it says I burnt is extremly lower than what MFP says I burnt..so I go with what the machine says. If the machine is wrong and MFP is right then woohoo for me but I would rather err on the side of caution.0

MFP is over estimates calories burned. I use other calculators I find on the internet, or I use apps on my phone and just manually adjust the calories burned.0
