I am going to be on the coast for ten days next month, and since I have always dreamed of running on the beach and will have an opportunity to fulfill that dream, I wanted to ask for advice from any runners who do this. What type of shoes would I wear? Any other advice you can give? Thanks in advance!

Just wear your normal running shoes and be advised that this is an awesome workout for your legs and bum. Its harder than it appears! Have a great run!

Thank you! I know that just WALKING on the beach can be difficult, so I can imagine how tough running is. Still, I am really looking forward to getting a few miles under my belt. I appreciate your help!

Thought about trying this myself, but lost my nerve because I don't run in "public" only at my gym where ther is only a couple of regulars. I saw the new running shoes that have the individual toes in them. I was told they would be great for beach running. Anyone try them? I have flat feet and was concerned about foot support.

I do most of my running at the beach, I always try my best to go at low tide so that there is plenty of flat, firm sand to run on. Running in the soft sand is no fun, but a pretty great workout! And I just wear my normal running shoes.

Yes, make sure you run down by the water in the packed sand if it's your first time running on the beach! Regular shoes are fine :)

I only agree with everyone else because I hate the sand kicking up into my shoes. If it weren't for THAT, I would always advise picking the harder option!

When I ran on the beach back in May for vaca. . .I really enjoyed it! I would suggested walking across the loose sand delicately and then do your running on the packed sand as the tide has receded. Also, I think it's best to go out early in the morning. I found it irritating trying to keep my kids out of other runner's way during the day. Plus, it may be fairly warm and it's pretty humid. A sunrise run on the beach. . .you won't forget it!!!

I use my older running shoes so I don't wreck my newer ones with sand and water and stuff.

I used to do it more than I do now. But, my knees are really hurting me right now, so I've been thinking of incorporating running on sand instead of running on concrete. I'd cut your running time about 75% from what you do now on pavement, unless you run hills or whatever. But, running on the sand, is HARD...at least for me. It's really difficult.

Definitely wear shoes because I rubbed two nickel sized blisters on my foot running on the beach at Destine.

I wore regular running shoes and made sure I ran/jogged in the packed sand. I don't like running in front of alot of people so I would go early in the morning before many people were out. Not only was it peaceful but I got lost in my surroundings and I didn't even notice that I was exercising. Have fun!

Try 'em, I love them, even with my 'flat feet'

Here is the article that made me try them

Just got back from a week in Punta Cana and ran 5-10k on the beach 6 of the 7 days I was there bare foot. Not sure if bare foot is a good way to go for everyone as opposed to wearing shoes but I love the opportunity to run bare foot while at the beach and for me it feels great. Great workout especially for the calf muscles.
