If you refrigerate your canned goods, the fat will rise to the top and solidify and can be scraped off.

I'm not sure it applies to beans. I haven't actually tried this yet. But I know when I have refridgerated leftover veggies from the can the fat actually does do this. Just never thought of scraping it off.

I only used canned beans and tomatoes for chilis... Oh, and green chilis when I'm out of fresh. I don't know if those have fat! What kind of canned veggies have fat in the cans?

Not sure how to log it, but less bad fat means more room for good fat. If you plan your meals in advance and you happen to go over, you can stress less about the number because you used this technique. I will probably use this for Thanksgiving dinner since I'm cooking this year. YAY! More cheese for the green bean casserole.

Canned kidney beans have 2g of fat according to the database.
Canned black beans have 1g of fat
Canned red beans have 1g of fat
Canned lima beans have 1g of fat

Admittedly, canned green beans don't have any fat (according to the database). I guess the fat in my leftovers is probably from the things I add to it. But this doesn't just have to be veggies. Canned soups, canned meats, and a lot of other things would probably have at least some fat.

I think it is at least something worth trying. I wouldn't recommend refrigerating it in the can after opening, though. Bacteria forms around the edges of the can.
  • This wrks in a different way with ground beef, supposably if you boil ground beef the fat will float on the water. Anyone done this? I just get extra lean meat!

My mom would always make crockpot things or other soups / stews one night ahead and do this the next day before serving it to my family. Probably a large part as to why she raised 3 thin, healthy eating girls.

I usually don't either, but on occasion, I have. I love canned asparagus!

Find out by refrigerating it. To estimate the calories removed, weigh it in grams and then multiply grams by 9.

Look at the ingredients in black beans, many have lard in them. Look for a vegetarian version or just check to find some without.
