Anyone done a technology 'fast'?
I'm thinking about giving up TV, iphone and laptop for 24 hours.
Anyone done this - or tried this?
It will be very, very hard for me, I doubt I go longer than an hour without looking at one of these devices, even when I'm napping if my iphone beeps I check the message.
If people are interested in this I might make a group to share experiences and tips.

YES. I do it at least 2x a year. TV, phone, FB (haven't returned since the last fast in Feb), Twitter...
My iPhone has been on mute (no ringer) since January. I answer calls when I get back to my phone. I sleep through the night without disruption.
I've been able to cut TV viewing to about 2 hours a WEEK. Yep, a week.
It's quite liberating and forces you to focus on growth & balance, not dependency on the next whistle, ringtone, buzz.
I highly recommend it.0 -
I havent done it but it is a great idea. We should all try it.0

I dont think i would know what to do with myself ... LOL0

*clutches my computer and my phone with a death grip*
No! You can not have my internets!
As for TV, I haven't paid for that garbage in almost 2 years. Saves my @ss 100plus bucks a month.0 -
I do it regularly. But i'm not attached to my phone, and most days I don't watch tv. The biggest thing im attached to is my computer, but when I go away on weekends I usually don't take it. It'll be good for you ya know. There won't be a constant need to check and see what's going on in the world, just experiencing what's around. Good Luck with it0

As soon as the Olympics start, I shut everything down. Stupid time-delay.0

no matter where you are in the world you can watch every event in the olympics live. either on network or cable tv. or online or on your phone.
the future is now!!!0 -
Yes. I end up feeling great, you realize that you don't need it to get by and entertain yourself. It's pretty great to remember what the sun looks like. (; ahaha0

Yes.
Even more often I go on news fasts.
I feel better when I don't always have information coming at me from all angles.
Enjoy!0 -
Did for a week for religious purposes. It was hard, but it was really eye opening. But tv and Internet addict still here!0

Oh, ya... okay, this. I don't watch TV. Haven't in years.0 -
Count me in.
How do we share tips if we can't use technology to share it. No but really, that was just a feeble excuse to use the computer.
I wonder if I will start shaking.0 -
but then my mpf day count would reset
:O0 -
I am interested in this. I don't watch tv but I do text alot and lurk online far too much.0

I've done it before ... it's fine ... but I use the internet for work and stuff so I prefer to have it on. You know, so I can pay rent and stuff0

Since I am a single parent, when I come home from work, its my time with my son. We eat dinner, talk, go for walks, and anything else that does not require to put the TV on (unless it is a show that we both want to watch together).
I put my work blackberry away and only look at it right before I go to bed. I really do not watch that much TV and the only time in the evening that I get on the computer is to read emails and update my MFP (and I only try to give myself 30 minutes to do this and its after my son has gone to bed). I sit in front of a computer at my job, the last thing that I want to do in the evening is be on the computer.0 -
Oh my gosh!!! I used to make my kids and I have a 'no technology weekend' about 1 every three or four months. It was SO GREAT!! Ok first let me say the kids moaned and groaned about it from the day I told them it was coming up, but once we got into it and started spending time together everyone got on board. Even though three of them have moved out we still talk about the good memories we had during those weekends. My youngest and I still have them, but now it is spur of the moment. We both just decide lets give it up for 24-48 hours. I totally recommend it!!
You will not regret it one single bit!!
Best of luck and have fun!!0 -
I've done it before. Actually had to for a class. It's tough! You keep thinking, "What if something happens? What if someone needs to get in touch with me?"
That being said, it's incredibly eye-opening to realize how dependent you are on technology. I walked away being more aware if nothing else.0 -

So, do you get a chance to check your phone once at night? Just to make sure no one has called you 15 times to say someone's in the hospital, or something? I have been very seriously considering canceling my internet access at home (I'll still have access at work, and I have an iPhone, so technically, I'll still have it). It will save me some money, and might reduce my TV watching. I don't have cable, but I feel that I have a pretty serious netflix addiction. Of course, unless I cancel that too, I'll still have it on my phone. Anyway, that was a lot of rambling to say, I think I'd be interested, just lay out what the exact "rules" will be.0 -

:O
This!! I would be all for the no TV and cell phone but MFP is my addiction and not sure I can go without it and losing my day count is NOT an option here...lol0 -

Lol!
The shakes go away pretty quick, it's the paranoia that sets in and takes over.0 -

Just wondering, does you iPhone have a hotspot? That's what I use for my internet and I'm not paying extra for the exact same thing. But, I also live by myself so I don't have to worry if someone else needs to use the internet.0 -
I can't, I'm in college online, I'm on my laptop pretty much every day.. lol0
-
I deactivated my FB account and closed my Twitter account - unplugging just a little bit.0

Hmm. Probably not - I have a pretty basic iPhone plan. Are you talking about tethering? Or something different? (sorry, I'm a bit tech backwards) I live alone too, so that wouldn't be a problem here. I do actually go days without using the laptop, but I watch Netflix through my xbox. Of course, I can't get to the boards on my phone, so when I see something interesting I have to log in on the laptop (or at work).0 -
Tv would be no problem, however my job requires me to have a cell phone and for most purposes a laptop as well.0
