Dressing your new body...

I am down about 46 pounds so far and am having a hard time dressing my new body. Before I lost the weight I was limited to 3 clothing stores (layne Bryant, Torrid, and Old Navy). Now that i am a size that most stores carry (10/12) I am lost ! I have always loved fashion and wished I could keep up with the latest trends and styles and now that I can I don't know how. Blah!

I am not near my goal, but I think you have to remain true to what you like.

Congratulations! Depends on your personal style - all the Gap companies are good (Old Navy, Banana Republic, Athleta). Ann Taylor LOFT, Eddie Bauer, Talbots, J Jill. Some of those stores are on the pricey end but get on their mailing lists for coupons and watch for sales - you can get good deals.

Have some fun learning where to shop  You will soon work out which shops suit your new body.

I agree with Ann Taylor LOFT. I'm a size 16/18 right now, and I can't wear their clothes, but I CAN wear the regular Ann Taylor store clothes (even though they are pricier and more career-focused). I disagree with Talbots if you are coming from Old Navy and Torrid, just because they are a very mature style and are typically more boxy or square in the torso.

Don't be afraid to look for an outlet mall nearby...There is a Tanger outlet not far from where I live, and I can't wait to wiggle into some on-sale Calvin Klein, Banana Republic, and J. Crew clothes, instead of the normal Gap or Old Navy jeans.

Whatever you do, remember that you deserve beautiful clothes, that flatter your new figure! You are at a turning point in your life; you can decide to wear whatever style you choose, and are no longer at the mercy of what corporations plan for you to wear! How exhilarating!!!

I'm a guy, so my perspective is going to be different. While I'm happy with the progress I'm making, it's certainly costing me money buying new clothes. I've gone through one rotation of new clothes. Getting rid of the original wardrobe was easy...but getting rid of the new set was hard because I just bought them not too long ago.

I just look at it as the price of freedom, and it's worth every penny.

Buy what makes you feel great about yourself. Don't settle for something that doesn't by rationalizing that it's "temporary."

Good luck and keep up the great work!

You are right, it was so easy to get rid of my "fat clothes" but having to get rid of the clothes i just bought is killing me !! I guess its a good excuse for some more shopping!

If there are any consignment shops in your area, try to see if you can take the clothes you recently bought there to be sold. That way maybe you'll also make some extra money to fund the next size down! So far, i haven't really had to buy anything new as I had my next size down still in my closet from the last time (and thankfully most of it is not sooo far out of style that I can't wear it). Another 10-15 pounds and I will need to buy new stuff. I may also try some thrift/consignment shops for those clothes because I don't want to go all out until I'm at my goal!

Another thing you might want to think about is going into stores where you've never thought of shopping - just see if anything there strikes you as something you might want to wear. You never know - you could surprise yourself!

    Congrats on your success!!! :flowerforyou:

I feel your pain! I used to wear baggy clothes all the time just so they would fit around my stomach and now that I've lost 40lbs (yay), NONE of my clothes fit. I've had to buy some shorts and tops and one pair of jeans and I have 2 dresses to wear. I still have 15lbs to go so I'm not going to spend much money on new ones, yet. I'm considering going to a 2nd hand store to donate all of my old stuff and to look for some gently used clothes for me to wear until I reach goal. THEN, I'm going to shop 'til I drop. lol

Same here! I recently went through all my clothes, and tried on EVERYTHING! Got rid of tons of stuff that I had bought in the last year or so after dropping a size. It hurt! And now buying new things more slowly, because even though I can't fathom dropping another size, I know it's possible!

When you shop, try on lots of things, even things that you might not have gone for before - your body has changed, likely your shape has changed, and clothes will look different on ya now. Watch for sales - don't know about your area, but all the back to school stuff is already in the stores, and summer stuff should be on clearance soon if it's not already! You could probably pick up a few things to take you through the rest of the summer.

And like imslinkee said - check consignment shops! You might be able to get some money for your old clothes, and pick up some good stuff in your new size for cheap! Thrift stores have helped me out too - I've found three pairs of great jeans for less than $5 a pair in my new size.

I love Fashion Bug, Burlington Coat Factory and Penney's right now. Lots of choices and prices are great.

    Thanks Ladies!
  • Also, check the thrift stores in/near the richest part of town. It's a bit of a drive for me, but I've seen nice brand-name stuff still with the tags on it at a Goodwill store near where the very wealthy live! Ross, TJ Maxx and Marshall's often have good stuff too (lots of jeans) - it's usually a bit behind the cutting edge of fashion but the prices are good. I'm trying to spend as little as I can on new stuff while I'm still losing, and save up a little for something really nice once I'm around goal weight.
