You are an inspiration to me. Our City Rec Dept has a couch to 5K program that will start in August & I am going to do it! I have never ran in my life but I need a new challenge! If you can do it, so can I (I hope)0

Saturday I ran my first 5k with a friend. She is an experienced runner as she runs marathons often. She slowed her pace down a lot to run with me but it was nice to have her there encouraging me. I have ran 3.1 miles on a treadmill but never outside. It was very hard, the hills kicked my butt but all in all, I made it to the finish line! It took me 48 minutes (which is a lot longer than I wanted) and am a little disappointed but have a time to beat for next time I guess. Anyway, I just wanted to share
That's awesome! You have a good handle on it in the sense that you have a time to beat, and that running outside is different.
Running is about adaptation. My advice to help your time in future races is to run at least once a week out of doors. It helps fuel that adaptation.
Personally, I will run outside year round. Year round for me means minus forty celcius, to plus forty celcius (about 100 F). I need the ever changing stimulus to challenge and refresh me. I run with a group as well to improve the social aspect. FWIW -> Yes we are a crazy bunch of Canucks...0 -
Thank you everyone for the positive feedback. I will definately start running outside more often to get used to it. I do want to do another 5k in the near future. And I have a very good feeling I will shave off quite a few minutes from my first race time.0

Congrats to you! The point isn't the time, it's that you did it at all. Treadmill is so very different from running outside, but the more you do it outside, the more you'll get accustomed to it (and quite possibly prefer it).0 -
WTG. The first run outside is very tough but you pushed through and finished. Don't be disappointed. Just remember there are a LOT of people who have not finished a 5k. You're already 1 step ahead of them. Keep going!0

Congrats! that's so awesome that you did it.
I'd say just getting to the finish line at all is something to celebrate. So you are rocking.0 -
That's wonderful! So glad you had a support system there to help you as well.
Just remember, someone like me has never run a 5k. So, you are doing amazing and should never be disappointed.
(I am not a runner so probably wouldn't do a 5k ever but you get the point lol)0 -
Wow congratulations! I think your time was great! Especially since this is your first one!
Also, I agree with what others have said, running outdoors is definately more challenging than running on a treadmill. Be careful, you may find that you LOVE running outdoors and your treadmill won't get used much anymore. :-)0 -
That's awesome!!
My first 5K time was 53 minutes.
I ran one on July 4th and got my time down to 39 minutes!! Next step, under 35.
You should be so proud!0 -
What an accomplishment, congratulations!0

Hey I ran my first 5k this weekend too! And it took me 45 minutes which was also a lot longer than I wanted and I was kinda bummed out about it too... I totally get how you feel! But you're right. Now we both have a time to beat for next time I signed up for my next 5k yesterday afternoon. It'll be in October when it's not so frickin' hot, lol...0 -
agree, running outside is WAY different. now you have a time to beat. keep at it!0

Congratulations!! You should be proud that you did your best!
I ran my first 5K on July 4th and had a great time. I was pretty nervous but overall did way better than I expected to. I do all my running outdoors so I was prepared for the reality of running on solid ground...it's a lot different than a treadmill and better IMHO.0 -
Congratulations! It is a goal of mine to do a road race this Fall... you are an inspiration!0

Congratulations to you! That is a great accomplishment for you and you should be proud! I'm doing my first 5k in 2 weeks. I'm so excited!0

That's GREAT! Congratulations!0

Who cares how long it took you!!! You DID it! And that's what counts. And that is what is AWESOME! Be proud of the accomplishment. It's HUGE. How far did you Run this time last year? And how far do you think you will be able to run next year? I ran my 1st 5K on July 4, 2011. Yup. Just last year. Took me 42 minutes. This past Saturday, 1 year and 3 days later, I ran my first Olympic triathlon. That's a 1 mile swim, a 30 mile bike ride and a 6.2 mile run. Trust me. If I can do it you can do it! And you've already done the hardest part. You started! Keep up the great work.0

Last year I would be lucky to have ran a mile so I am improving. I just have to keep working at it0
