Hello,

I don't quite understand how portions work - out of a book.

I'm trying to figure out how much and what kind of food should be on a typical dinner plate !?

Do drop in suggestions and how you plan a plate.

That depends on what your caloric intake is, your planned purchases for food, your meal planning, what dietetic-choice of intake is, etc.

There shouldnt be any issue with portions if you are using a scale for weighing your food. A food-scale is much more effective in portion control than any other tool available.

What is considered typical will never be typical from one person to the next.... One person may decide to have that 2oz of cooked pasta, while for me, I would have 8oz of cooked zucchini instead of pasta.

What one person has will greatly differ than the next person's

This is what I do, I know it's not exact or scientific or whatever: Raw veggies, eat as much as you want! Meat, your portion size should fit in your palm. Cooked veggies, rice, potatoes, etc, same thing; fit in your palm. Fruit, one piece is a serving. Cut up fruit like melons, one serving is a cup.

I use a salad plate for most of my meals. If I use a dinner plate, it looks like I am hardly eating anything. :D I fill up my dessert plate and that seems to be the right amount for me.

An easy and understandable way to put it. Easy to remember.

I heard somewhere that if you trade in your dinner plate for a saucer or salad plate, its a lot easier to portion your food automatically. I've been trying it & it works- you definately cannot fit 3 pieces of pizza on a saucer

Thank you for sharing this advice ! It's been really helpful !

The next discussion has got to be how to stop ! once you've reached portion limit. :)

    Best,
