Yes because any exercise you do helps you0
-
How fast are you going?0
-
It's still burning more cals than sitting down.0
-
Well any exercise is good, that is true.
How fast are you walking? I walk a 13 minute mile, and I don't have a HRM but I know my heart rate is higher. It takes me about an hour to walk four and a quarter miles, and I burn around 300 cal. Maybe increase the intensity? See if that makes a difference. It should, bottom line (from what I understand anyway) is that the amount of energy you exert while doing an exercise determines how many calories you burn, not how long you do it.0 -
yes, any exercise is better than nothing!!
make sure your HRM is set up right, 85 cals does seem very low. Average 3mph walking is usually around 150 cals an hour.
If you want to get your HR up more, just walk faster, or go somewhere hilly, you shouldnt have any issues finding a hill or two in sheffield :-)0 -

i walk about the same! i also am pushing a double pram which weighs about 70lbs and i go up and down hills i think maybe my HRM was out but i dont really feel out of breath i do get a sweat on depending on the hills etc i do love walking and its best thing i can do in the day as i have a 2yr old and 1yr old with me at all times0 -
You HRM is telling you to start jogging.0
-
Find some hills, if you can, and up your pace!0

Nope, no point in walking, or breathing, or eating. We're all going to die someday.0

I'd say something is definitely up with the HRM - make sure it's flat and laying correctly on your chest. I know mine will sometimes get moved by my bra and I'll see my heart rate go down - as soon as I make sure it's back in place, it's all good. 85 is way too low for walking that long unless you're moving at a snails pace . Could you maybe need a new battery?0

No, never...movement is only for water and air.0
-
My HRM lets me know that when I'm not exerting my heart too much I'm actually burning fat, when my HR is higher then I'm in gaining fitness mode...0
-
That just sounds wrong to me. I mean, even the most casual 5 miles will burn 200 calories0
-
There is something wrong with the reading on your HRM. An average person burns about 100 calories a mile. Given that the average heart-rate is 72 bpm, you must have burned some energy doing 5 miles..0

First off, the good news is, there's no way you only burned 85 calories walking 5.2 miles with a steady HR of 115. Your HRM must be way off. You definitely burned more calories than what it's telling you.
Second, a heart rate of 115 isn't that bad - that's more than likely in your fat burning zone, and although a higher HR would burn more calories, 115 for (how much time?) is nothing to sneeze at.
Third, walking is good for your muscles, as well as your heart/aerobic fitness. Walking involves your legs and your core, so that is real exercise that is going to help keep your metabolism elevated, which means burning even more calories after you stop walking.
Fourth, the post about your HRM telling you to start jogging is really funny, and you might want to think about it. Personally, I hate running, but lots of people get really hooked once they start. You might love it! Plus, you'll burn more calories in a shorter time - again, how long did it take you to cover the 5 miles?0 -

Now that's some fiiine sarcasm...0 -
unless you have an unusually high resting heart rate, 115 sounds like your heart was elevated to me. 5 miles is a pretty good walk and great exercise. I'm thinking your HRM isn't figuring the right calories, because in the time it would take to walk 5 miles your body would have burnt 85 calories if you were in a coma.0

I walked for just under half an hour, averaged 108 bpm, covered 1.82 miles with a pace of 15:22 and it said I burned 129 cals. I was pushing to keep the heart rate in the target zone, and did a couple of short jogs.
Is it set up right ?
polarpersonaltrainer.com says for me :-
HR Zones Energy expenditure (avg.)
HR % bpm kcal/min kcal/h
50 - 60 % 86-102 3.6 217
60 - 70 % 103-119 5.3 317
70 - 80 % 120-137 6.9 417
80 - 90 % 138-154 8.6 517
90 - 100 % 155-172 10.4 6250 -
Then if that is the case, you have to be burning more than the HRM says. I would check to make sure it's calibrated properly? I don't have one, so I'm not sure how to check.0

Thank you for saying what I was thinking. :drinker:0 -
My HRM lets me know that when I'm not exerting my heart too much I'm actually burning fat, when my HR is higher then I'm in gaining fitness mode...
That would be a misunderstanding of the various zones. It is actually telling you at that lower intensity that you are burning more fat as a percentage of the total energy your body is burning, but you are burning very few calories. In the "fitness" zone you burn a lot more calories, just a lower percent from fat. Here is the thing you need to realize, even burning less percentage of those calories from fat, you still burn more total calories from fat in the "fitness" zone during the same length of time exercising than you will in the "fat burning" zone. In other words, higher intensity with the higher heart rate will burn more fat total for the same length of workout.
To put that in practical terms, if you spend a half hour walking you will burn much less fat than if you spent that half hour running.0 -
Yes yes yes... just walk a bit faster!0

HRMs really aren't made to estimate everything. Consider a Fitbit. Or not 'eating back'.0
-
It's a better alternative than sitting!0

I've been walking a lot over the past four months. When I started it was a big deal to get over 5,000 steps and now I'm up to the point where going 10,000 steps (about 5 miles) in a day is no big deal. I often make use of my walks to catch up with friends and family on the phone, so I'm not going super fast or getting out of breath on them.
Just a couple of weeks ago I was walking on a treadmill and decided to see how long I could run without stopping. I hadn't run in over a year, when I had trained for a 5k, so I thought it would be a couple of minutes and I'd have to go back to walking. Imagine my surprise when I was able to run for 20 minutes straight!
So walking must be doing something for me.....0 -

This sounds about right to me - 30 minutes jogging at a moderate pace is about 250 cals, so walking for the same time should be about 1500
