Scales

Hi Everyone!

When I began MFP, I weighed myself on a set of scales at work that we use to weigh our packages for FedEx because I did not have any scales at home. About a month after, I wanted to weigh myself at home for privacy reasons so I went and bought a $30 scale and began using that and stopped using the one at my work. Today I thought I would see what the work scale said to see if there was a huge difference.

Here's my dilemma: If I go by the scales at my work I have lost 15 pounds since May 1. If I go by my bathroom scales at home, I have only lost 13 from my start weight that I entered on MFP. I weighed on both today and there is a two pound difference.

Bare in mind that my start on MFP is already 4 pounds less than what my actual start weight was. (I don't know how to change that if I can.) I already started dieting and exercising before finding MFP and had already lost some. So my actual weight loss would look more like this: 19 lost according to the work scales and 17 according to the bathroom scales.

You are probably saying, "Ok so what is your question?" Actually I have two:
1. Was it a bad idea to change scales? Which one should I go by? (Would like to go by the one that is showing more loss of course *wink.)
2. How can I change my start weight on MFP to reflect my "actual" start weight so that my profile is accurate? (Sorry a little OCD on this one.)

**I understand that there is always going to be a difference in scales due to manufacturer, time of day weighed, calibration, etc. I also know that scales are not the only way to measure my success, so please don't beat me up telling me all the factors that effect the results on the scales. Don't want to sound rude, but the last time I posted on the message boards, I got a lot of rude, hasty responses and it deterred me from posting for a while. We are all here for the same goals and can play nice, can't we?

Found out how to change my start weight so that answers that question. Thanks:happy:
  • The answer to the first question is that it doesn't matter which you use--just stick to one scale. It's a 2 pound difference. Rather negligible really.

I can't answer part 2, but for part 1: I would weigh on both scales for the next few days and compare. If there is a consistent 2-pound difference, I would use the work scale for an accurate difference. I think those scales have to be calibrated and accurate, so if it's always 2 pounds less than the one at home, but you want to use the one at home, I would subtract two pounds every time I weighed at home.
