I just want to hug them...

When I see someone obviously trying to make changes to better themselves (lose weight, stop smoking, stop drug use, a homeless person turning in job application, ETC) I seriously want to stop what I'm doing and hug them.

I know it's a breach of societal norms. That's exactly why I don't do it... but the urge is so there.

For example, while I was working my very last shift as a Burger King assistant manager last night, a very obese woman came in. She ordered a kids meal for herself. I didn't hug her but I told her that I was proud of her for making changes in her life.

I got a very puzzled but brilliant smile and a huge thank you!

Anyone else do this?
More importantly, how would you feel if someone said something like that to you?

Well, she wasn't... and she'd been in there A LOT! She'd always order double whopper with cheese meals. Is it so bad for someone to notice a positive change in your life?

I think with things like that you have to be careful - she could easily have got offended.

Not that I'm saying that's right. I think it sucks that so many people are so easy to jump on the defensive. You would struggle to say anything nowadays that doesn't offend someone, somewhere.

Personally though I don't see anything wrong with what you said.

i think it leans more to you are/were judging me for what i eat. and then commenting on it when *you* felt i made a choice you agreed with. you asked "More importantly, how would you feel if someone said something like that to you? " and i just gave my honest opinion. i would be highly offended, especially a complete stranger. glad she wasn't tho, could have been awkward for you if she was!

True. In the moment I didn't really think about her being offended. I just wanted to offer support and show her that her movement towards better choices was noticed. I thought it was positive but people can always take things differently than you mean them.

I gave a thumbs up to a jogger last week. Sweltering heat and an older gentleman was pounding pavement like he was born to do it. He waved and gave me a smile. =)

If I see someone who is overweight or obese riding a bike, jogging, or working out, I always yell "Good for you!" and smile at them. They all motivate me to do the same!

g00dm0rning, this is a wonderful post!

I think in that situation it was okay to comment on her food choice because you know her prior eating habits. Not to mention she probably knows you and you know her at least on an acquaintance basis.

If you didn't know how she ate before, then it probably would have been a little risky. That's very nice of you though.

I think she had a relationship with the lady. If you can encourage people to make positive changes, why wouldn't you. You never know, she may have been about to give up and it may have given her a boost. Some people like to know that others care about them, and if they are healthy. I say keep it up.

No, I was proud of her for purchasing a smaller portion. You can still fit fast food in on occasion. You really shouldn't ban anything from your diet.

thats a bit different from a person commenting about the food you have ordered . i have worked in alot of food places and to comment on a persons choice of meal because they are obese is the rudest and inappropriate thing you can do

I just see her a lot. I do not know her name. She obviously knows mine because I wear a name tag. However, deviation from the norm is not easy and I commended her... It seemed to make her happier. Oh well.

It wasn't because she was obese. Hell, I'm considered obese! It was because she was making a marked change in her usual order. I'm sorry if you consider that rude.

I think this post is great. It shows me that there are still some great human beings out there in the world. More people should be like you... BUT...

Are you sure she wasn't getting it for her kid? He could have been in the car? Or did she stay and eat it.

And way to go on your last shift ever!!!

I love that people are supportive and encourageing, which is the main reason I come on here. I think it is lovely that you think the way you do. I often want to 'help support' other people but the reason I choose not to is not because of societal pressures but because if they wanted 'supporting' they would be on here too (or similar).

I do think you are a lovely person for being that way though and I wouldn't be offended if it were me. xx:flowerforyou:

I say great choice to just about anyone that orders a salad, lol. They (corporate execs) encourage you to make some sort of encouraging remark when you're taking orders... UGH!

no i would never ever comment on any ones choice of food that was a customer regardless of size .
and if i ever did that would be wrong all personal thoughts unless related to that person should be kept to yourself when its a customer

Yeah, I read more into the posts, and realized you said she comes in there often. Although, she could have taken it wrong I am glad she didn't. I think it may have made her day, someone took notice of a change she made. That's awesome.

For me, its when I see really old people, like old... 70+ walking, running, biking. I always just say out loud, whether they can hear it or not... you go girl/guy!!
If anyone is getting out there and doing something good for them, I think encouragement really helps boost that drive! So kudos to you OP!!

Really when all of the BK training guides say that once per order you should say something personal like, "that's a great choice," or "that's my favorite"??? It sucks but that's what they want you to do...

thats not the way you intended it ,you said it because you thought she was making changes in her diet , not because the food choice was a tasty choice to make you commented on the portion size and that is rude . saying a meal choice is a good choice because it tastes good is different the intent is different
