Last few lbs and body fat help

Hey everyone. I hit my weight loss goal recently by basically watching my intake of food and walking A LOT. (SN: I haven't logged in two weeks but I have stayed on track). I decreased my sugar intake by quite a lot from when I started MFP and that seemed to help tremendously on my inches lost. My only problem is toning. I know that I have to strength train in order to accomplish this BUT I'm really nervous about losing anymore weight. I have the mom tummy, jiggle and all, and it WILL NOT budge or maybe I need to do MORE. I try to do planks at night and a few ab exercises but honestly, I don't see much change...

Stats: 5'0, 117-118, BF 23%, 33.5, 26, 34. I wanted to get down to 21%... not sure about it though.

I have the shape I want. I do NOT want to lose my figure or my curves and I'm terrified of doing too much that will do either.

Can someone help. I don't want ripped abs just a nice toned tummy. Thanks so much!

  • I am in a similar situation. A few months back I was about 5 pounds lighter and everyone was worrying about me saying I looked too skinny. So I don't want to go back to that, but I also have a muffin top on my belly that is stubborn as all hell! Right now I have upped my calories to just around maintenance, and i am trying to do arms and abs every other day. I will let you know how it works out. I will also be training for a half marathon, so I guess I may be upping my calories even more if I am still losing weight. I think the key is to start doing the ab workouts and adjust your food intake as needed, based on whether you start gaining or losing until you find your maintenance point. Good luck and feel free to add me :-)

Sounds about half right. Upping your calories to maintenance is a good idea but you can't spot reduce your stomach even if it is just a little bit. You're going to need to drop more body fat to get rid of it. Stick with the maintenance calories, do some interval cardio for maybe 30 minutes a day and incorporate some compound strength training. Don't just do your arms but work more than one muscle group at once. Pushups, squats, lunges, dead-lifts (if you want an awesome butt), shoulder dumbbell press, bench press, and add a few sets of abdominal exercises 2-3 times a week but don't go crazy with the ab stuff. The compound movements will work your central core enough already.

You still need a calorie deficit to reduce fat so don't eat back your calories spent on exercise. The strength training will help keep your metabolism running high and will give you the firmness you're wanting. If you're losing too much weight then increase the calories slightly but you can't get rid of fat without a negative diet. You're going to need to fine tune to get rid of this last bit. Don't stress about being down 5 pounds under your goal. We all know how easy it is to gain weight. Get the fit look you want first, then sloooowly add back some pounds to taste if you don't want a really lean look. If you do it this way you can have that slightly soft look without the muffin top.

For me the key was cutting my carbs.(and increasing protein) I try to keep carbs under 100 and just get them from fruits/vegs/a little bit of healthy grains. Now I just eat a half an Ezekial english muffin instead of a whole extra fiber Thomas's english muffin. I used to eat a bagel for breakfast, a sandwich(whole wheat) and then brown rice w/dinner.
Now If I want oatmeal I stick with steel cut oats or quick oats. ( I used to eat the Quaker high fiber oatmeal every morning) And with yogurt I went from Chobani fruit to plain greek yogurt w/ cinnamon/real fruit. I guess I ended up cutting my sugar too by making/ eating cleaner choices.
I've always worked out- so I didn't change my routine- but cutting those carbs a little and adding more protein helped me lose the last 10lbs.
    good luck to you!

Thanks so much for the responses. I'm going to try different methods and see what works. I'm willing to make changes in certain areas to get to my ultimate goal but I have to say with the help of MFP and its community, I've come a long way from when I first started and its such an improvement. Either way, I'm happy :)
